Stella swirled her wine, shooting occasional glances at Chester across the room as she continued to chatter away.
Suzie couldn't help but laugh at her friend's antics.
"Alright, you've seen right through me, so I'll save my breath. Except..."
Suzie paused, glancing back toward the stage before continuing,
"Except, he... doesn't know yet."
Stella gave a wicked grin. "Isn't today the perfect opportunity? Let me tell you, this is the kind of thing you have to casually drop on him. Make it look completely effortless."
Suzie frowned slightly. "No, I'm saving it for a knockout blow..."
"What knockout blow? Unless you're planning to run out of here right now, you better act fast. That guy looks like a social butterfly—the second Jamie steps off that stage, he's going to drag him right over here."
Suzie took a slow sip of her champagne and offered a faint smile. "That's easy to handle."
Right on cue, Chester strolled back over with an empty glass.
"What are you two plotting over here? Why aren't you mingling? By the way, what was the deal with that woman at the entrance earlier? I couldn't tell if you two were friends or enemies."
Suzie replied coolly, "At the moment, I'd say enemies."
"Really? Then why did you give her an invitation?" he asked, looking surprised as he swapped his empty glass for a fresh one from a passing waiter's tray.
Suzie didn't want to get into it, so she simply stayed quiet.
Chester narrowed his eyes, tapping his fingers thoughtfully against his glass.
"I get it. You've got your own agenda, don't you? Fair enough. I'll just sit back and enjoy the show."
Stella chimed in, "Listen to you. You sound like you know our Suzie so well."
He shot Stella an arrogant smirk. "Obviously..."
Chester was quiet for a moment before nodding.
"I can, but I have conditions..."
His tone was teasing, testing her boundaries.
Suzie raised an eyebrow, entirely unfazed.
"Oh? In that case, I don't really mind if we bump into each other. Pretend I never asked."
She deliberately looked away, pretending to be utterly engrossed in the glamorous crowd as she sipped her drink.
Sure enough, a moment later, she caught him leaning over the high-top table in her peripheral vision, looking like a kicked puppy.
"Miss Suzie, I was just kidding... Tell me what you need, and I'll make sure it's done."
