But before the crowd could swarm them, a team of mall security guards rushed in and blocked the path.
Avoiding the commotion, Suzie took a different route toward the elevators. The one Chester and Suzanne had taken was already descending to the B2 parking garage.
Deciding the elevator was too slow, she pushed through the fire doors and hurried down the stairs.
The moment she slipped into the dimly lit garage, she spotted them immediately. She ducked behind a large SUV, keeping low as she crept closer to listen.
Chester was furious. "You drain my bank accounts, and now you're down here impersonating some other woman to con people?!"
Suzanne didn't sound remotely apologetic. She fired back fiercely, "You gave me that money willingly! What, do you want a refund now? Too bad, it's gone. I'm broke. You can kill me if you want, but you're not getting a dime back. And who am I impersonating? I was at that gala last night! Open your eyes—that's Jamie Baylor. You cross me, and I'll have him destroy you!"
Suzie heard Chester let out a dark, mocking laugh.
"Is that so? You bagged yourself a bigger whale, huh? Well, that's funny. I was at that gala last night too, and I certainly didn't see you hanging off Jamie Baylor's arm."
Suzanne's bravado instantly vanished. A heavy silence hung in the air, clearly indicating Chester had hit a nerve.
After a few seconds, Suzanne stammered, "Y-you... how could you be there? I didn't see you all night."
"Suzanne," Chester spat, his voice dropping into a lethal calm. "Consider the money I wasted on you charity for a stray dog. But let me give you a piece of advice. Keep playing these con games, and one day you're going to scam the wrong person and end up rotting in a cell."
"Who the hell do you think you are?!" Suzanne shrieked. "I ate with you, I slept with you—giving me some cash was the bare minimum! What, were you planning to marry me? Save your lectures, you're no saint either! The next time we see each other, you better pretend you don't know me!"
With a final furious scoff, Suzanne stomped off toward the elevators. The doors dinged, and she vanished.
