Stewart Sterling stared at his mom, who was prone to throwing tantrums on the floor at the drop of a hat. Was she going to start wailing again?
He couldn't even find a job right now, and he was drowning in debt. Aside from Suzie, who else would look out for him?
And Ruby Sterling? Since the day he was hospitalized, she had been completely M.I.A., as if he were trying to suck her dry.
His entire family was useless. Suzie was the only one left who could actually take care of him.
With that in mind, Stewart got off the couch.
Margaret suddenly shot up and screamed, "Don't you dare go looking for her!"
"Why not?!" Stewart yelled back.
Margaret gritted her teeth. "If you don't want to see your mother drop dead, you stay away from her!"
Stewart paced around the room frantically. A moment later, he held his hand out to Margaret, acting completely entitled. "I'm only looking for Suzie because of the money. If you won't let me go to her, then give me a hundred grand."
Margaret's eyes went wide. She slapped him hard across the face. "I broke my back sending you abroad to study, and you come back as nothing but a deadbeat! You want money? Do you want to harvest my organs and sell them?!"
Margaret trembled with rage, her furious voice laced with the agonizing disappointment of a mother whose son had turned into a complete failure.
That slap pushed Stewart over the edge.
He snatched his phone from her hand and stormed into his bedroom, slamming the door so hard the frame shook.
The deafening slam sent Margaret collapsing to the floor, where she broke into loud, agonizing sobs.
