Suzie had no intention of sticking around. She glanced at the pile of gifts on the ground and said coldly, "Give those to whoever you want. If my kids need anything, I can afford to buy it myself."
Without another word, she walked straight toward Mia, gave her a few quick instructions, and headed straight for the parking lot.
Suzie went home.
On the way, she stopped by the grocery store to pick up the kids' favorite ingredients, planning to cook them a massive, delicious dinner.
By evening, knowing the kids would be home soon, she got to work in the kitchen.
She had several pots going at once—steaming, boiling, simmering.
When she heard the front door open, she couldn't leave the bubbling pots, so she called out, "Mia, don't let them in the kitchen, it's not safe. Have them wash their hands and sanitize first. Dinner will be ready soon."
She heard several sets of footsteps heading toward the bathroom.
A moment later, out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Mia standing nervously near the kitchen island.
Suzie's gaze flicked between the stove and Mia. "Zelina and Wilna are helping them wash up, right? Go relax in the living room. Prepare yourself for a feast."
She smiled warmly, waving Mia away from the kitchen.
But Mia just stood there, looking incredibly guilty. She opened her mouth to say something, but before she could, a tall, broad-shouldered figure walked right past her and straight into the kitchen.
Mia immediately bolted. She was terrified Suzie would yell at her—even though Suzie had never raised her voice at her before, this was an entirely different situation.
Assuming Mia had left, Suzie went back to focusing on the stove.
When she finally sensed someone standing right behind her, she turned her head.
The sight made her jump so badly that the silicone spatula slipped right out of her hand.
The tall, muscular man caught it with lightning reflexes. Instead of handing it back, he reached his long arm right past her shoulder and started stirring the food in the pan.
