Thinking of this, Suzie was desperately anxious to hear the rest, but she held back from rushing Nadia.
A few minutes later, Nadia hung up the phone, took a few sips of coffee, and continued, "When Mrs. Jennings discovered Margaret's audacious baby swap, she didn't expose it. Instead, she took the baby Margaret had switched and swapped it with another family's. Do you follow? For instance, Margaret swapped you for my baby, and Mrs. Jennings swapped mine for someone else's. All three families ended up raising a daughter that wasn't biologically theirs."
Suzie was stunned. So she wasn't a Lockwood. That was the missing piece!
Suzie quickly asked, "Who were the other two families?"
She didn't reveal to Nadia that she already knew about the Lockwood family. Who was the third family? She still hadn't found any clues.
Nadia sighed. "According to Mrs. Jennings, one of the mothers had a surname that was hard to remember; she only knew the husband's surname was Lockwood. Another mother was surnamed Yates, but she didn't catch the husband's name. The mother from the Yates family seemed very elegant and spoke unlike ordinary people, and she had well-behaved staff with her. She was clearly much wealthier than the Lockwood mother. Margaret's goal was to swap her daughter with the Yates mother, but because of Mrs. Jennings' meddling, Margaret's child went to the Lockwood family, and you..."
"Where is Mrs. Jennings? Can I see her?" Suzie interrupted hastily, her face a storm of emotions.
But at this question, tears welled up in Nadia's eyes. She choked out, "She... she passed away."
Nadia wiped her tears and added, "Mrs. Jennings was my best friend. She knew what Margaret had done to me, and she did it to seek justice for me. But she never told me exactly how Margaret managed the swap or how she herself did it. She was critically ill, and she only told me this when I visited her on her deathbed."
