Suzie took a moment to compose herself, a fresh wave of sorrow clouding her dazed eyes. Her voice trembled as she spoke.
“Stella… I… I haven’t really thought it through. I’ll figure it out after the divorce is finalized.”
Stella gently squeezed her hand. “Okay. Whatever you decide, I’ll support you. And whatever difficulties you face, we’ll face them together.”
“Okay…” Suzie choked out, touched by her friend’s loyalty.
After they embraced for a moment, Stella stood up and briskly began to unpack Suzie’s luggage.
“Stella, stop,” Suzie protested. “I’ll go back to my apartment. You’re a light sleeper, and I’ll just disturb you if I stay here.”
Stella waved her hand dismissively. “Nonsense. Seeing you like this, there’s no way I’m letting you stay alone. Just listen to me.”
Before Suzie could object again, Stella was already carrying the suitcase into the guest room.
Suzie, who had started to get up, sank back onto the couch. If she refused again, Stella would actually get angry.
She looked away and scrolled through her phone, stopping on a five-second missed call from Jamie. Slowly, she moved her finger and opened an unread text message from Aaron, saying the City Hall appointment had been moved to the afternoon.
Suzie scoffed. Did everything have to be on his schedule? Even the time they finalized their divorce?
Her long, slender fingers danced across the screen as she quickly typed and sent a reply.
A few seconds later, Aaron called.
Suzie rejected the call immediately.
Moments later, another text arrived from Aaron: [Ms. Sterling, Mr. Baylor has an urgent conflict. Can we move it to tomorrow afternoon?]
Suzie typed back: [No.]
As she hesitated, Aaron’s respectful voice came from behind her. “Ma’am, the president said to have you go right in when you arrived.”
Suzie turned slightly, her gaze cool as she looked at him. “Just Suzie is fine.”
Aaron nodded with a complicated expression, still maintaining his deferential manner as he opened the door for her.
As Suzie walked in, she scanned the room. Jamie was sitting behind a massive desk, seemingly at work.
Beside him stood a vibrant, beautiful woman. Her long curls cascaded down to her waist, and her delicate, perfectly made-up face was strikingly gorgeous. Her curvy figure swayed subtly from time to time, keeping her intimately close to Jamie in a way that was undeniably suggestive.
Although Suzie had never met Chloe before, she matched the descriptions perfectly.
Suzie’s cold eyes swept over Chloe before finally landing on Jamie’s face. “Mr. Baylor, what’s this urgent matter you mentioned?”
Perhaps her footsteps had been too light, because only when she spoke did the two of them finally look up.
