Suzie frowned. It was the girl from the next cubicle who had spoken to her earlier.
“Give it back,” Suzie said coolly, reaching for the folder.
But the girl spun around, turning her back to Suzie, and began flipping through the documents.
Suzie was a little stunned. What kind of person does that?
Given her condition, Suzie didn't press forward to fight for it.
A moment later, after the girl had finished reading, she tossed the folder onto Suzie’s desk, her voice dripping with jealousy.
“So who pulled strings to get you hired? You just started, and the boss is already giving you your own project—and the easiest one at that. Do you have any idea that at Mirage Studio, only mid-level and senior photographers are qualified to handle projects alone?”
“Does that have anything to do with you?” Suzie slowly picked up the folder and glanced at her, her voice just as flat as before.
She assumed a dismissive reply would end the pointless argument, that the girl would lose interest and stop.
But the girl persisted. “The rest of us had to go through round after round of interviews to get in. I checked with HR, and I couldn't find any record of you passing a single one.”
Suzie gave a faint, knowing smile. She pulled a document from her own bag and slapped it down on the girl’s desk.
The girl stared at it, her eyes fixed on the bold words: Senior Photographer — Direct Appointment. As she turned the page, she saw a collection of certificates and a portfolio full of original, polished work.
Her face flushed with embarrassment. She pushed the file back, gave Suzie a slight nod, and returned to her seat without another word.
Suzie calmly retrieved the document, tucked it back into her bag, and finally began to review the project file.
A short while later, someone shouted, “Lexi’s back!”
Lexi stood confidently in the center of the crowd, her voice calm and composed as she finally spoke.
“You all flatter me. My work just happened to be a cut above that Sienna from Lumina Studio, so the manager at Baylor Group took a chance on me. You all just have to keep working hard.”
Her tone sounded modest at first, but every word was laced with a competitive edge against Sienna and an unmistakable pride in her own work.
“Lexi, I heard you get to bring a newcomer on this project. What about those new hires who were looking for you at the studio earlier? Are you taking any of them?”
At the question, Lexi’s smooth brow furrowed slightly. Her gaze swept over a few of the newcomers, then scanned the rest of the office.
Everyone held their breath, waiting for her answer. Suzie, too, watched the scene unfold.
After a moment, she saw Lexi walking toward her.
