The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 81

And now Jamie, of all people. Why was this heartless man suddenly here?

She slowly lifted her head to meet his gaze, but her expression had already shifted from fear to indifference, a coldness radiating from her entire being.

Jamie had intended to ask if she was okay, but seeing her like this, his words took a sharp turn.

“What’s this? Did you know I was passing by and decide to put on another show for me?”

The cold, mocking voice drifted past Suzie’s ear, making her heart tremble. Her fingers tightened around the fabric of her dress.

Of course. He wasn't here to save her out of kindness. He was just taking another opportunity to humiliate her, as he always did.

Suzie took a deep breath, trying to calm the storm inside her. She stared straight into his eyes, a sharp, defiant look settled over her face.

“And how would you know we’re just acting?” she retorted, her tone mimicking his own sarcasm. She gestured to the crowd around them. “Considering who you are, and the fact that you just pushed Margaret, what do you think the tabloids will have to say about you tomorrow? I, for one, can’t wait to find out.”

Just as Suzie finished speaking, Aaron rushed over, moving with swift and decisive purpose. He went from person to person, putting a stop to anyone recording or taking pictures.

Soon, all the phones were lowered.

Just then, Margaret, who had cried herself to exhaustion, suddenly lunged forward and knelt, clinging tightly to Jamie’s leg. Tears still streamed down her face as she wailed, “Jamie! Oh, Jamie, how could you just abandon my daughter like this? You can’t be so cruel! Look, I’ve already taught her a lesson. She’ll listen to you from now on, I promise!”

Margaret’s performance was masterful. Her tragic cries instantly cast Jamie in the role of a heartless, two-timing bastard.

Suzie’s gaze darted between Margaret and Jamie. Seeing the spectacle unfold before the watching crowd, she wished the ground would swallow her whole.

Taking advantage of Margaret’s distraction, Suzie violently wrenched her arm free from Jamie’s grasp. Her eyes were cold and resolute, her voice even colder. “Jamie, stop harassing me. Even if this was an act, you could have just pretended you didn't see it! It's none of your damn business!”

With that, she turned her sharp gaze on Margaret, her tone piercing. “And you! Stop bothering me. I will never have any money for you, not in this lifetime! Even if I did, I wouldn't give you a cent! If you want to make a fool of yourself out here, be my guest!”
