Her words were rapid-fire, defiant, with no hint of surrender. It was as if she was determined to pour out every last drop of her resentment and fury.
Before Jamie could interject, she added sharply, “Are we done here? Stop clinging to the ex-wife you claim to despise. You're acting like a leech.”
Her eyes screamed, *I’ve had enough.*
And she had. She had had more than enough of Jamie's games and the pain he inflicted.
She didn’t know it, but each word she spoke was a dagger plunging straight into Jamie’s heart. A flash of shock crossed his face. The moment she said he wasn't human, his expression transformed. His face became grim and pale, the color draining from his lips.
He opened his mouth to say something, but the words caught in his throat. His usual arrogance and confidence evaporated, replaced by a look of confusion, even sorrow.
He couldn't fathom what he had done to earn such deep-seated hatred from her.
She was the one who had been at fault, wasn't she? She was the one who whispered another man's name in her sleep. She was the one who treasured that necklace with the word 'LOVE' on it. She was the one who repeatedly met with other men behind his back.
Yes, he had been the one to propose the divorce, but she had been even more eager, hounding him daily to finalize the paperwork. He had even worried about her well-being after they separated, sending Aaron to her door with money multiple times, only to be met with her scorn.
He had tolerated all of that. But then she had gotten pregnant with another man’s child!
What could she possibly resent him for? For killing the fetus in her womb? He was her ex-husband; he had no obligation to accept another man's child. The fact that he hadn't destroyed the man responsible was an act of supreme mercy. He remembered how his bodyguards had to show her Oliver's personal information to get her to go to the hospital willingly…
This man had wounded her to her very soul.
If she hadn't threatened those doctors with her own life that day… she couldn’t bear to imagine what would have happened after he had destroyed the children she so desperately wanted to keep. Would she have gone insane? Would she have killed herself? Or would she have tried to take him down with her?
A moment later, the pressure of his grip forced a few involuntary coughs from her. Jamie’s brow furrowed, and a flicker of emotion crossed his crimson-red eyes.
Just as he was about to release her, his gaze fell upon her pale neck. Among the fresh scratches, there was an old scar. From experience, he knew instantly that it was from a blade.
For a moment, he seemed to forget his anger entirely, his furious eyes now fixed on the jarring scar.
