The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 83

How did I run into him here? Is this torment ever going to end?

“Who taught you to be so rude?” Jamie’s voice, still unnervingly calm, reached her ears again.

“It’s not everyone,” Suzie shot back. “Only you. Now move, or I’m calling the police!”

She made a slight move, testing his reaction. As expected, he mirrored her, shifting his feet to block her path again.

Suzie stopped moving. She knew it was pointless. Jamie was impossible once he got like this. He would relentlessly obstruct and humiliate her until his fit passed and he decided he was done.

She was exhausted. Her legs ached, and a dull pain was spreading across her lower back. The mile-long walk to Stella’s apartment, which usually felt manageable, now seemed impossibly far.

Giving up, she shuffled over to a tree by the roadside and slumped against its trunk.

Jamie watched her silently, his expression still unmarred by anger despite her insults.

Changing the subject, he said peacefully, “Richard… he’s been discharged from the hospital.”

“I have regular video calls with him,” Suzie replied dismissively. “I don’t need you to be my messenger.”

Jamie noticed her movement but said nothing, though his eyes kept darting back to her bag.

After a moment of silence, he cleared his throat. “You’ve changed, Suzie. What happened? Is life this hard without the glorious title of Mrs. Baylor?”

The taunt in his voice was unmistakable, and it slowly kindled a fire in her chest. But for the sake of the baby in her womb, she fought to keep her emotions in check.

“Jamie, the day you sent your men to the hospital to forcibly abort my baby, you stopped being human in my eyes. Do you understand? So don’t ever expect your pathetic insults to hurt me again.”
