After leaving the hospital, Clara hailed a cab directly to her own apartment.
Susan, worried about her health, tagged along. However, she didn't realize they weren't heading to Pelican Bay until halfway through the ride.
Hesitantly, she asked, "Ms. Vance, aren't we going back to Pelican Bay?"
Clara, who was staring blankly out the window, paused before lowering her gaze. "No."
Susan assumed Clara was just angry at Julian and needed a few days away, so she nodded in understanding and secretly texted him:
[Mr. Lowell, Ms. Vance is genuinely angry this time. She didn't go back to Pelican Bay; she went to her own apartment.]
...
Half an hour later.
The car pulled up to the apartment complex.
The moment Clara stepped inside, she gave Susan a few brief instructions, didn't even bother to take off her shoes, and went straight to her bedroom. She stepped onto a chair, took down the 'Serenity After the Rain' painting from the wall, and smashed it forcefully onto the floor!
Instantly, the wooden frame shattered into pieces, and the canvas tore open.
Clara looked down at the ruined artwork, her chest heaving heavily, a reddish tinge creeping into the corners of her eyes.
Thinking back to the moment she had received it from him a few days ago, zoning out while staring at it, she realized how utterly foolish she had been!
But that wasn't enough. Clara jumped off the chair, pulled open her vanity drawer, and took out the exquisite White Magnolia hairpin. With both hands, she snapped it in half and tossed it onto the floor like trash.
With a sharp crack, it felt like more than just the hairpin had shattered...
In the living room, Susan heard the crashing sounds from the bedroom and paced around anxiously. She wanted to go in and comfort her but didn't dare. "Oh my, what should we do!"
Fortunately, the doorbell rang at that moment.
Guessing who it was, Susan hurried to open the door.
