Blushing fiercely with humiliation, Clara kicked his thigh, leaving a dusty footprint on his immaculately tailored suit pants.
"Get away from me! Get out! Go live with Seraphina! I will never waste another second with a man like you!"
Julian frowned. Feeling a sour twist in his chest, he rubbed her waist roughly and spoke with the last shred of his patience.
"I know you're angry right now. Take some time to cool off!"
He let go of her, straightened his rumpled cuffs, and walked out with a cold expression. He immediately slipped back into his usual aloof and aristocratic demeanor, acting as if what just happened was a trivial disagreement.
But Clara was left thoroughly traumatized, every inch of her body aching with distress.
As the door clicked shut, Clara deflated like a popped balloon, slumping back onto the stool. She hugged herself tightly, staring blankly ahead as if her soul had been drained away.
Men were always like this, only caring about their own feelings. They arrogantly assumed a woman's suffering was no big deal, that a few sweet words would fix everything—or even better, that she'd get over it without any coaxing! Either way, they assumed she would never leave.
But he was dead wrong.
She truly didn't want him anymore.
...
Julian stepped out of the bedroom, his face as dark as thunder, clearly in a foul mood. He sat down on the living room sofa and lit a cigarette.
Seeing him emerge without having pacified her, Susan walked over anxiously, sighing.
"Mr. Lowell, Ms. Vance was genuinely wronged this time. She wasn't with that Mr. Jarrett for any improper reasons. She was having a terrible stomachache, and since there was no one else around to help her, she had to rely on him..."
Julian paused with his cigarette halfway to his mouth.
Susan continued to advocate for Clara. "Her stomach hurt so much earlier. She was crying out in pain even in her sleep. Her face was so pale, it just broke my heart to see..."
Julian's fingers trembled slightly, the ash from the cigarette burning his skin, but he seemed entirely numb to the pain.
So, back at the hospital lobby when he ran into Clara, she was already incredibly sick?
And he... he had abandoned her to deliver medicine to Seraphina.
In truth, he could have easily asked someone else to take it up for him, but he hadn't.
Julian closed his eyes, suddenly overwhelmed by profound regret and guilt.
Susan added, "Mr. Lowell, even as an outsider, I feel terrible for her, so Ms. Vance must be hurting even more. You really need to comfort her properly this time, or else she truly won't stay with you."
Julian frowned, the final words pricking at his throat, causing a sudden swelling ache.
He didn't love Clara.
But he had never once considered the possibility of her leaving him.
