When she was with him, he had never once let her work a grueling job or touch a drop of alcohol. Yet, when she ended up with Julian, he forced her into endless social obligations, drinking until she developed a severe stomach ulcer.
No wonder that night at the club, a single glass of alcohol triggered such an extreme physical reaction. Her stomach had already been destroyed long ago.
Dominic abruptly closed his eyes, tilting his head back slightly as the edges of his vision burned.
Seeing the man's terrifying expression, Zane frantically tried to defend himself, "I didn't want her to go out and work either! But our family was practically starving back then, we couldn't afford to support her!"
Dominic shot him a piercing look. After a long pause, he said in a low, dangerous tone, "Once you leave here today, I don't want anyone else knowing about this conversation. Do you understand?"
Zane nodded aggressively. "I understand! I swear, I'll take this to my grave!"
Dominic nodded, gave his bodyguards a meaningful look, and turned to leave.
The bodyguards understood immediately: the boss wanted them to keep a close eye on Zane to see if they could bait the bigger fish hiding in the shadows.
Whoever orchestrated the plot years ago definitely had operatives in the capital monitoring Clara and Zane's family!
Leaving the club, Dominic got into his car. Leaning back against the seat with his eyes closed, he pondered everything he had just heard...
Outside the car, Toby made a quick phone call. A minute later, he got into the passenger seat and said, "Mr. Jarrett, I've already dispatched a team to investigate The 5th Precinct. I think Zane told the truth this time. I'll start by digging into the police station's records."
Dominic opened his eyes. The depths of his gaze were as murky and ominous as the darkest trench in the ocean.
"Just have someone keep an eye on the precinct. You won't find anything in the records. If those people had the nerve to pull this off, they definitely destroyed the evidence."
Toby was stunned. "Then what should we do?"
Dominic's eyes grew darker. "Focus on Zane. Someone is bound to make a move on him in the next few days. We'll catch whoever is pulling the strings."
Toby understood instantly. "Understood."
Dominic nodded. With the orders given, he finally opened the black leather folder to review the documents... A heavy layer of gloom settled over his eyes.
In reality, the fastest way to uncover the truth of what happened years ago was to help Clara recover her memories!
"Contact Professor Thorne. Briefly explain the situation and ask him to set up a meeting with Clara."
"Right away."
...
At the apartment.
Julian didn't leave that night. He knocked on the master bedroom door a few times, but Clara refused to open it. Her sheer stubbornness left Julian entirely devoid of his usual temper.
