These days, the team felt more like Raymond's private money-making machine than an actual racing crew. He managed them with only one goal in mind—profit.
Lucas wanted to reach out to Lucy to complain, but he had no way of contacting her. The only person he knew was Noelle, and she was only a coach Lucy had brought in. Besides, the last time Noelle visited, she had been furious at their performance, so he didn't dare trouble her again.
He really wanted to reach out to Lucy and beg her to replace the team manager. Raymond didn't see them as people at all—only as machines for making money.
Many on the team were already at their breaking point, but none of them could terminate their contracts. If they did, they would face enormous penalties. That was something none of them could afford.
At one point, Lucas thought of asking Lola for help. But ever since the challenge at Moriane, she had vanished. There was no one left to turn to.
And he regretted listening to her and signing away control of the team. Now, no one could save them.
...
"Boss, be careful. Asher's been looking into Lucy's identity. Don't show up as her again, or he'll latch on like a dog." On the other end of the line, Albert's warning carried a sharp edge.
Noelle was surprised. "Why is he looking for Lucy?"
Albert chuckled darkly. "Lola was captured by those in Moriane. She couldn't deliver on the modifications, so they stopped believing she was Quake. She told them Lucy was the real Quake, and they believed it."
As for why Asher was looking, he was probably hoping to strike a deal.
Noelle hadn't expected Lola to pull such a stunt—shifting the target onto Lucy. Not only did she deny being Quake herself, but she also dragged Lucy's name into it.
"And Lola?" she asked. "Is she still in Moriane?"
"She was tortured nearly to death. They cut off three of her fingers out of anger. Asher bailed her out, partly because she had once carried his child, but they had broken up. Once he realized she wasn't Quake, he wanted nothing to do with her. She tried to see him again, but he shut her out."
Albert snorted. "The fact that it took him this long to realize she wasn't Quake is just ridiculous."
Noelle wasn't surprised. "She won't dare claim the title anymore. If she tries, not only will those in Moriane tear her apart, but Asher will too."
After all, having someone who didn't even understand car modification pretend to be a modification expert would be a huge risk for the Miller family.
Quake represented Stonegate in the challenge competition, and the Miller family had accompanied her throughout the event. If they wanted to protect their family's reputation, they had no choice but to disown Lola, the imposter.
After all, a fraud could be exposed at any moment.
She had races to focus on, but that didn't mean she couldn't strike from the sidelines.
Anonymously, she sent Asher the hospital records and dates from Lola's checkups—records that made it clear the child she carried had never been his. Along with them, she attached intimate photos and videos of Lola with Clifford.
Noelle couldn't help feeling puzzled. Asher had been active in Brindley for so long. How had he never heard about Lola's scandal with Clifford?
Or maybe Lola's Quake image was simply too powerful, blinding Asher to reality and making him believe her lies.
Whatever the reason, Noelle was sure of one thing—Asher would never tolerate being associated with someone carrying a stain that big.
Just then, a pair of strong arms wrapped around her from behind. Hunter had just come out of the shower, droplets of water still clinging to his skin.
"All done?" he murmured against her ear.
"Damn it! She's my girlfriend now, and yet she still spends more time on everything else but me," he thought.
Noelle smiled faintly and turned around. Before she could say a word, Hunter caught her lips in a kiss.
