Too Late Alpha The Mate He Never Wanted (Iris and Eric) novel Chapter 138

Chapter 138

Iris’s POV

The moment the name left Rowan’s mouth, the world tilted.

The name hit me like a slap.

…the Crescent Moon Pack has agreed to the alliance,” Rowan said, his voice was steady and firm.

For a second, I thought I had misheard. But then he repeated it clearly. The Crescent Moon Pack.

My stomach dropped. The air around me suddenly felt too tight, and the main hall suddenly felt too small, like the walls were closing in.

Not possible. My old pack. My place of nightmare.

My ears rang so loud I missed the rest of Rowan’s words.

Beside me, Jasmine shifted. “Are you okay, Iris?”

Her voice sounded distant, like she was speaking through water.

“I-” My lips moved, but nothing came out. I forced a mumble that even I couldn’t make sense, but it sounded something like. I’m…fine.”

Jasmine frowned, but she didn’t press, giving me a sympathetic look instead. She probably thought I was still in shock from Rowan’s first announcement.

No one here knew where I came from. They didn’t know my past.

Rowan continued, but his words blurred into words that my brain couldn’t regis …patrols… territories… protection…tribute”

I couldn’t process a single syllable. My mind was spinning with several images that had tried to bury for months.

Evie in my arms, small and cold, watching Eric as he drove away that night.

The sound of my own screaming until my throat was raw.

My fingers trembled on my lap. I dug my nails into my palms until they ached as I tried to steady the shaking.

Shane leaned slightly toward me. “Are you sure you’re alright? You look pale.”

I forced myself to give a small nod, keeping my eyes fixed on the platform. “Yeah,” I

croaked. “Just… tired.”

He studied me for a minute, but he said nothing.

Rowan’s deep voice cut through the murmur of the hall again. “And to seal this alliance, their Alpha has come personally to finalize the terms. He has brought his Beta. We welcome them here.”

My chest seized as panic gripped me.

No, no, no-

I gripped the bench so hard. I could barely hear anything now.

Run. My mind screamed. Run.

But my body wouldn’t move. My legs felt glued to the floor.

Rowan turned slightly toward the side doors. “Alpha Eric,” he announced, his voice rang out across the hall, “welcome.”

The name alone made my blood run cold.

Shane tilted his head, frowning. “Iris, you’re shaking. Do you want to leave?”

My mouth opened, but only a garbled sound came out. My throat was too tight to speak.

But if I moved now, everyone would look. And he might see me.

I gave the smallest shake of my head, hoping he would drop it. As he opened his mouth to say something else, the doors at the side of the platform opened, and t he was.

Eric.

He looked exactly as I remembered. Tall, broad-shouldered, and golden hair that gleamed even better than Chloe’s. His sharp green eyes scanned the hall with a calm confidence.

My heart pounded so hard it hurt.

The last time I had seen that face was on the road the night Evie died, when he turned his back and left us to fend for ourselves.

My throat tightened painfully.

My wolf stirred faintly deep inside me. The first response I had felt from her in

months.

I swallowed hard, trying to calm my erratic Heart.

Eric approached Rowan and clasped his hand in a formal greeting.

Their words were a blur.

“…honored to form this alliance…” Eric’s voice rolled over the crowd.

That voice sliced through me like glass.

For a second, the hall disappeared. All I could hear was his voice. The same voice that had barked at us to get out the night he walked away while Evie struggled for her life.
