Too Late Alpha The Mate He Never Wanted (Iris and Eric) novel Chapter 36

Chapter 36

Iris’s POV

I woke up with something on my chest.

For a second, I didn’t know where I was or why my pillow felt odd. Then I looked down and saw Evie’s coloring book. Even in my sleep, I had clutched it tightly.

My breath caught as everything came back in an instant.

Evie. The forest. The rogues. The blood. Rowan. Last night.

I blinked at the ceiling. My eyes felt heavy and swollen, and my face felt dried with dried tears. My body still hurt, but it was better than yesterday. My ribs ached with every movement, and my legs burned like my bones had been crushed. But still better than the last day.

The room was dim, and the silence was suffocating.

Sometimes, I still expected to wake up to Evie’s voice. Or hear her footsteps running toward my door. She would jump on the bed shouting “Mommy, wake up!” several times and press her cold feet against my leg just to

annoy me..

But now… there was nothing.

No laugh. No footsteps.

Just suffocating silence.

I swallowed hard and rubbed at my eyes, trying to stop the tears before they started again.

There was a small tray near the nightstand. It hadn’t been there last night.

Toast, scrambled eggs, juice and a note, written in a slightly familiar handwriting:

Didn’t want to wake you. Jasmine will bring your meds soon. – Rowan.

I had no appetite to eat, but I needed strength if I was going to escape.

I didn’t hesitate. I reached for the food slowly and took a small bite, chewing carefully. A knock on the door pulled me out of my thoughts.

“Iris?” Jasmine’s voice called from outside the door.

“Come in,” I croaked.

She stepped inside and walked over to me with a glass of water and pills. She didn’t ask questions. She handed them over, and helped me sit up with minimal pain, and waited quietly as I took them.

Her eyes flicked to the coloring book on the bed. Her expression didn’t change, but something in her eyes softened.

“Thanks,” I murmured.

She hummed, giving me a warm smile. She left a few moments later.

When she was gone, the silence returned.

I glanced at the coloring book and brushed my hand across the cover of the book.I closed the book and placed it back in the bag.

I couldn’t look at it anymore today.

I forced myself out of bed. The pain was still sharp, but I made it to the bathroom and leaned against the sink, catching my breath before I looked up.

When I did, the mirror nearly made me flinch.

The person staring back at me looked haunted. She was so pale with purple shadows under her eyes and dull brown hair sticking out. Her lips were dry and cracked. Her cheeks were sunken.

My blue eyes looked so tired and without life.
