Iris’s POV
I didn’t move. Neither did he.
The air was charged, and tense. My heart pounded in my chest, my mind kept telling me that this was a bad idea, but I couldn’t tear my eyes away from him as an unknown emotion rushed through me. I didn’t know what it was, and I was scared of finding out
Rowan’s fingers grazed my cheek gently. His lips parted, just slightly, and I was pretty sure I wasn’t breathing anymore.
Then—
Knock. Knock.
“Iris?” Jasmine’s voice pierced the silence. “I’m here with your meds.”
The moment shattered.
Rowan blinked and pulled his hand back abruptly like he had just touched fire. He stepped away quickly, his eyes darting to the door.
I turned my face to the side as heat rushed to my cheeks.
The door creaked open.
Jasmine walked in holding a small tray. Her eyes immediately landed on Rowan, then on me. Her eyebrows lifted, but she said nothing. The silence that followed was incredibly awkward.
“I was just… helping her back to bed as she was injured,” Rowan said stiffly, stepping fully away from the bed and rubbing the back of his neck.
Jasmine glanced at me, then back to Rowan. “Right,” she said, drawling slightly. “Helping.”
Rowan cleared his throat. “I have something to take care of.”
And just like that, he turned and walked out of the room, closing the door behind him.
Jasmine stared at the closed door for a long second before turning to me with an unreadable expression on her face.
“I had to try,” I muttered.
She sighed, shaking her head. “You’re stubborn and stupid, but mostly stubborn.”
I gave her a weak glare, but she just smiled faintly and leaned back a little. Then her smile faded.
“Be careful with my brother,” she said, her tone was unreadable now.
“What?” I blinked. Was she about to give me one of those dramatic “If you hurt my brother, I’ll hurt you” speech? Or maybe “Stay away from him, he’s been through enough” warning?
I braced myself and asked her carefully, “Are you trying to tell me to stay away from him?”
But Jasmine’s eyes darkened.
“No,” she said simply. Her voice dropped lower. “I’m telling you to be careful… for yourself.”
