Too Late Alpha The Mate He Never Wanted (Iris and Eric) novel Chapter 45

Chapter 45

Iris’s POV

Something was wrong.

The first sign was so small that I almost missed it.

It was like a faint tightness in my stomach. It was nothing to worry about.

Earlier, I had seen the food tray sitting in the hallway like it had been these past few days. And as usual, no one waited around after that one soft knock. I didn’t think twice. I brought it inside, sat down, and ate without hesitation.

When I finished eating, I pushed the empty plate aside, and rested against the pillow. Suddenly, it started. It was like something was twisting deep inside me. I thought maybe it was because I had eaten too fast. That happened sometimes.

But the twisting got tighter and tighter.

I sat up slowly, frowning.

Cold sweat ran down my head, and the room tilted.

I blinked hard, trying to focus, but my vision was getting blurry. My heart pounded very fast against my chest. I pressed a hand to my stomach with a small grunt.

Something was wrong.

I dragged my legs out of the bed and tried to stand. My knees shook. My vision blurred again. I grabbed the table for balance as nausea washed over me.

My mind snapped to the food tray.

I had eaten all of it without thinking or checking.

A chill crawled up my spine.

It could be Chloe. I had joked to myself earlier. Now the thought washed over me like ice water. Chloe would do it. She had the motive, and I was a nobody. No one would care if she poisoned me.

My stomach twisted hard, and I bent over with a sharp cry. I pressed my hand against my stomach, as the pain spread fast, burning my chest.

I staggered toward the door. If I could get into the hallway, maybe someone could help.

A sudden wave of dizziness slammed into me. The floor dropped out from under my feet, and I caught myself on the wall just in time, narrowly avoiding falling on my face.

I tried to shout for help, but my lips were moving, and yet no sound came out.

My throat burned, like acid had been passed through it.

My heart was pounding wildly now, and a piercing pain shot through my head.

My legs gave out, and I hit the floor hard. Pain shot through my body, but I barely felt it as heat burned through my veins.

I dragged myself forward on the floor inch by inch. The door felt like it was several miles away. It was getting harder to breathe as a sharp pain shot through me whenever I inhaled.

I reached the doorframe and slapped the door, hoping the sound would reach someone on the other side. My eyes kept wanting to close.

No. Not yet.

I forced them open as I dragged myself up enough to twist the handle. The door cracked open, but no one was on the other side.
