Too Late Alpha The Mate He Never Wanted (Iris and Eric) novel Chapter 55

Chapter 55

Iris’s POV

Jasmine froze mid-step, looking like I had just said something forbidden. Her eyes darted to the trees around us, scanning around like she expected someone to jump out and attack us.

Finally, she leaned closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. “She’s dead.”

My eyes widened in surprise at her words. I opened my mouth, with several questions already on the tip of my tongue, but Jasmine’s sharp glare cut me off.

“No,” she said firmly. “We are not talking about this. No one talks about it, Iris. Not me, not you, not anyone. It’s not something you ask, and it’s not something you whisper about. It’s… off-limits.”

Her sudden harshness stunned me. “But-”

“I mean it.” Jasmine’s eyes were fierce, and her tone was firm. “Forget I said anything. Her death is not something you should get tangled in.”

I shut my mouth, even though confusion burned inside me.

I furrowed my eyebrows as I watched the way her shoulders were tensed, and the way she kept scanning the woods like the trees themselves were eavesdropping.

What was so complicated about Rowan’s mate’s death that made Jasmine this tense?

That thought circled in my head endlessly. But looking at Jasmine’s expression, I decided to drop it. For now.

I swallowed hard, lowering my gaze to the forest floor. “Okay,” I murmured. “I won’t ask again.”

“Good,” Jasmine said quickly, as if we kept speaking longer about it, it might summon something.

She forced a smile, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “Come on. We’re almost there.”

We walked in silence for a long time, but the question kept tugging at me. Her warning only made me even more curious, though I tried to bury it. It was a shame I was leaving already.

Finally, we got towards the pack’s border.

My stomach sank when I saw the two patrol guards standing at the

path.

Jasmine slowed down as we approached. “Stay close,” she whispered. “Don’t say anything unless they ask.”

I nodded, holding my bag so tightly my fingers ached.

The guards noticed us immediately. They straightened their postures, and narrowed their eyes as they watched me curiously. I almost shrank backwards.

“What brings you here this late, Jasmine?” one of them said, his tone was casual but cautious. His eyes flicked to me. “And you’re with… company.”

“She’s leaving,” Jasmine said plainly. “I’m walking her out.”

“She’s not a prisoner,” Jasmine snapped, her tone was sharper now. “She’s free to come and go

The shorter guard’s gaze lingered on me, looking very curious. “Rowan knows about this?”

My chest tightened, and I looked at Jasmine quickly. She didn’t hesitate. “Yes,” she said smoothin

It wasn’t a lie, but it wasn’t a full truth either. Yet, she spoke with such confidence that the grands étán’t question it.

Jasmine cleared her throat. “She’ll be safer if someone accompanies her across the ridge. At least till she reaches a safer path so that she won’t be alone in case of a rogue attack”

The tall guard nodded slightly. “I can go with her.”

“No.” The word left my mouth instantly without hesitation

All three of them looked at me.

I forced a small smile. “I’ll be fine on my own.”

“Iris-“Jasmine started, but I shook my head quickly.
