Chapter 12 Tomatoes With Scrambled Eggs
Zachary crouched on the ground and untied the rope at the mouth of the beast–hide bag. The moment he loosened it, several apples rolled out. They were big and bright red, so tempting it was hard to look away.
The apples piled together as Zachary picked out the mushrooms, planning to wash them and leave them outside to dry before he put them away.
The ginger could simply be buried in sand, and it could be stored for months.
The kiwis he picked today were already fully ripe, so they had to be eaten soon. The tomatoes would pair perfectly with the scrambled eggs tonight, and the rest could be saved for soup next time.
Meanwhile, the wild vegetables he dug up could be stir–fried or made into something refreshing. If he gathered more in the future, he could dry them out to preserve them even longer.
The more Zachary thought about it, the happier he became. In just one day, he had already collected so many ingredients. The future looked promising.
Something about filling up the empty storage shed felt incredibly satisfying, and he happily sorted through everything he had gathered.
Jaden watched him, his expression complex. After hesitating for a while, he finally couldn’t help walking over. Pointing at the pile of mushrooms and ginger on the ground, he said, “Sire, these can’t be eaten.”
“Hm?” Zachary looked up at Jaden’s serious little face and smiled. “Trust me, they’re edible. You’ll understand once I have them cooked.”
Perhaps Zachary’s tone sounded too certain, or maybe Jaden didn’t want to ruin his good mood.
In the end, he said nothing more and simply followed Zachary’s instructions, helping him deal with the things on the ground.
Thinking they might not have enough water, Zachary stood up and walked to the stone water jar to check. To his surprise, the jar, which had almost been empty earlier, was now filled to the brim and nearly overflowing.
“Did you go fetch water?” Zachary asked Jaden.
“Yeah.” Jaden was squatting on the ground picking through the wild vegetables as he responded with a nod.
“Thanks for the hard work.” Zachary was starting to grow fond of this child. Even though he didn’t talk much, he handled things more reliably than many adults.
“Alright, I’ll start making dinner.” Zachary glanced outside the cave. The sun was about to disappear behind the forested mountains, and only a dim yellow glow remained in the sky.
It was getting darker by the minute.
Zachary untied the vines binding the wild chicken, picked up his knife, and was just about to deal with it when the bird suddenly flapped its wings violently.
The sudden movement startled him. Zachary had never killed a chicken before, and he looked awkwardly

at the knife in his hand.
After hesitating for a moment, he gritted his teeth and raised the knife toward the chicken’s neck. But before the blade could fall, the chicken on the ground suddenly pecked at him.
“Hey!” Zachary quickly stepped back.

Hearing the commotion, Jaden glanced over. He set down what he was holding, walked over, grabbed the chicken by the neck, and headed out of the cave.
Zachary followed him and asked, “Where are you going?”
“To kill the clucking beast.”
“Can you save the feathers for me?”
“Okay.”
Jaden worked quickly and skillfully. If he didn’t dislike getting blood on the feathers, he wouldn’t even need the knife–his claws alone would be enough with just a few swift slashes.
It didn’t take long for the clucking beast to be fully processed. Jaden gathered the feathers into a pile, wrapped them in a leaf, and handed them to Zachary
Jaden tossed the chicken scraps into a pile of grass, letting nature handle the rest.
“How convenient,” Zachary remarked, marveling at the wonders of nature. He spread a large green leaf flat on the stone slab beside the bowl and used it as a plate for the ingredients, placing the washed ginger and mushrooms on top.
After cleaning the wild chicken, he cut it into chunks with the knife and put them into a stone pot, adding cold water.
Jaden took the initiative to start the fire, then went back to dealing with the pile of wild vegetables.
Once the water boiled, Zachary blanched the chicken pieces and scooped them out. He heated oil in the stone pot, added slices of ginger to release their fragrance, then tossed in the chicken and stir–fried it until it turned golden. Even before the stew began, the aroma was already drifting out of the cave.
Taylor had been bored by himself. After helping Quincy tidy up, he slipped away to look for Jaden. As soon as he reached the area near the cave, he spotted the familiar figure.
Taylor quickly walked over and sat beside Jaden, staring at what he was doing. “What are you doing?”
“Just sorting the wild he was sitting on.
getables.” Jaden shifted slightly, moving aside to give Taylor half of the wooden seat
“Wild vegetables taste awful.” Taylor pouted, but still reached out to grab a handful. “I’ll help you.”
“Just pick out the weeds and the yellowed leaves.”
“Got it.
As Taylor worked through the vegetables, he unconsciously leaned closer to Jaden.

“You have no idea how shocked my Sire was when I brought that clucking beast. He kept asking if you were the one who gave it to me.”
At this point, Taylor huffed in dissatisfaction. “He just doesn’t believe me. He thinks you’re better than I am.”
Feeling the weight on his shoulder, Jaden straightened a little. “No, you helped a lot today. Thanks to you, we managed to catch the clicking beast.”
Hearing that, Taylor brightened again. “Exactly. We’re both amazing. Next time, I’m going to catch a long/ eared beast and roast it.”
Taylor’s hair had a bit of a natural curl, and as it brushed against Jaden’s neck, it tickled.
Jaden couldn’t help pushing Taylor’s head slightly away. “Well, you can try.”
“What’s that smell?” As they talked, Taylor’s nose twitched. He turned toward the scent. “It smells so good!
At that moment, Zachary had just lifted the lid of the stone pot and was adding salt to the soup. The rich aroma of chicken broth drifted outside with the breeze.
Jaden said, “The clucking beast is being cooked.”
