Chapter 142 Memories Written in Winter

His voice had been cold. You said you’d take good care of him.

Huh?Harper and Wesley both looked confused.

A moment later, realization struck Harper. “You’rethe kid who found Zachary back then?

Matthew stared at them without a trace of warmth.

Finished

The chief and the shaman also walked over. The chief smiled as he spoke to Matthew. Harper’s family will be staying in our tribe from now on.

Harper quickly nodded along.

The chief continued, Harper has agreed to let Wesley be your mate, and Wesley is willing as well.

Wesley’s face flushed as he glanced shyly at Matthew. But Matthew turned away. He lowered himself to one knee in front of Zachary, who had curled into himself, and asked, Do you want to be my mate?

Zachary looked at him blankly. Matewhat does that mean?

Matthew thought for a moment before answering, If you become my mate, we’ll live together. I’ll protect you. I won’t let you get hurt or feel cold. I’ll pick fruit for you, find clucking beast eggs, hunt plenty of meat so you’ll always be full

It was as if Matthew had poured out monthsworth of words in one breath. The surrounding therians stared in disbelief, some even rubbing their eyes as if they couldn’t trust what they were seeing.

Zachary’s eyes widened, stunned. RReally?

Really,Matthew swore earnestly.

Zachary grabbed his arm with both hands and nodded. Yes, I want to be your mate.”

The chief and the shaman exchanged knowing smiles, but Harper and Wesley’s expressions turned particularly ugly. Harper pointed at Zachary. This kid of mine is an idiot. There’s something wrong with his head. He doesn’t know anything.”

Wesley chimed in, My brother hit his head before. He only recognizes us.

Zachary lowered his gaze, his voice small and dejected as he said to Matthew, I don’t know how to do anything

You don’t have to.Matthew’s reply came without hesitation. I’ll do it.”

Zachary’s eyes seemed to grow misty. He turned his head away and sniffed quietly.

Outside the memory, Zachary felt something warm slide down his face, drop by drop. His chest tightened painfully.

Harper’s family ended up staying in the Black Panther Tribe.

Matthew did exactly what he had promised. He picked all kinds of fruit for Zachary, and every time he brought back prey, he traded with the others in the tribe for eggs of all sizes. Sometimes, he even managed to get golden honey, which Zachary lovedthough it often left red welts on the back of Matthew’s hands.

Zachary seemed afraid of interacting with others, so Matthew carried him through the forest, ran with him on his back, and climbed trees with him to watch the stars and the moon. Every time, Zachary would laugh, bright and carefree.

He still didn’t like being around other people, always sticking close to Matthew whenever they went out. So Matthew dug out a cave at the far western edge of the tribe. Many therians came to help, while Zachary hi behind Matthew, softly thanking them one by one.

On the day they became mates, Matthew brought back an armful of flowers from somewhere- them, in every color imaginableand arranged them by the bedside.

When they lay down together, Zachary suddenly leaned in and kissed Matthew on the cheek, then gently bit his lips. Matthew’s eyes widened instantly.

That night, broken sobs echoed through the cave, only fading as dawn finally arrived.

Time passed quickly.

Zachary carefully arranged the flowers Matthew brought home in every corner of the cave. He leaned against Matthew in the sunlight outside, waiting each day to see what food Matthew would bring back.

Happiness lived in the smile that never seemed to leave Zachary’s face.

Later, Zachary’s belly gradually grew round, and Matthew would wrap his arms around his waist, pressing his/head gently against it.

More and more fruit filled the cave, and people occasionally came by to deliver all kinds of round eggs.

Matthew always left early in the morning. By the time he returned from hunting, Zachary would just be waking up. He would gather Zachary into his arms, sit by the fire, and keep urging, Eat a little more.

Some time passed again before one day, many people gathered outside the cave. The shaman was there too. Matthew’s face was deathly pale as he gripped Zachary’s hand, his forehead drenched in cold sweat.

Zachary, I’m here. Don’t be scared

The scene ended abruptly, everything swallowed by darkness.

On the stone bed inside the cave, Zachary lay still with his eyes closed. The flushed redness from his fever had faded, leaving his thin face pale and sickly.

Matthew lifted a bowl, took a mouthful of the graygreen herbal medicine, andjust as beforeleaned down to feed it to Zachary.

Afterward, he stepped outside and said to Jaden, who was washing bowls, Watch your Sire.

Jaden nodded. Okay.

The medicine prescribed by the shaman had to be taken for several days. The stingtail beast feed at home had already run out, so Matthew prepared to go out and get more.

Not long after he left, Taylor arrived. Calling out Jaden,he hurried into the inner cave, crouched by the bed, and gently touched Zachary’s hand. Zachary, you need to get better soon.

Jaden followed him in, wiping the water from his hands on his beasthide clothes before placing his palm against his Sire’s forehead. It was still warm.

Taylor asked, When will Zachary wake up?

Jaden replied, The shaman said it’ll be soon.

The weather was bitterly cold. A fire had already been lit inside the cave, close to the bed. The two cubs added more firewood and sat nearby, keeping watch over Zachary.

Outside, the snow continued to fall. The howling wind echoed through the empty mountains, and every household in the tribe had sealed its doors tight with beasthide curtains.

Very few subtherians could be seen outside. In the vast white expanse, only the occasional therian appeared.
