Chapter 143 Tears That Finally Fell
Finished
On the bed, Zachary’s brows suddenly drew together. His fingers curled tightly as tears streamed uncontrollably from the corners of his eyes, quickly soaking the beast–hide padding beneath him
Jaden sprang to the bedside in an instant, his expression tense. “Sire?”
Taylor hurriedly wiped Zachary’s tears with his hand, panic written all over his face. “Is Zachary in pain? He’s crying…”
“I’ll go get Mr. Bruce.” Jaden turned and dashed straight into the snowstorm. He had barely run ten meters when he crashed right into Matthew, who had just returned.
Seeing how frantic Jaden looked, Matthew’s heart immediately jumped. “What happened?”
The little black panther let out an anxious cry. “Sire suddenly started crying. I was going to get Mr. Bruce
Matthew rushed into the cave. The door slammed open with a bang, and only when he reached the bed did he realize he was still covered in snow.
He shrugged off his outer robe, then gathered Zachary into his arms through the beast–hide blankets, his rough palm steady against him. “Zachary, I’m here. Taylor, heat up some water.”
“Oh–okay!”
Matthew pressed a kiss to Zachary’s soaked lashes, again and again, gently stroking his back.
“Matthew…” A hoarse, fragile voice broke through.
Matthew froze, then looked down sharply. At some point, Zachary had woken up. His reddened eyes brimmed with tears, like a spring overflowing, endlessly spilling over.
Matthew wiped the moisture from his face with his calloused palm, his brows tightly furrowed. “Does it hurt that much?”
Zachary stared straight at him, his icy blue eyes surging with emotion.
Matthew’s chest tightened painfully. “Mr. Bruce will be here any-
Before he could finish, Zachary suddenly threw his arms around him, pressing his forehead against Matthew’s chest. At first, it was only quiet whimpering, but soon it grew louder, until he broke down into uncontrollable sobs.
Matthew had never seen him like this. At a loss, he wrapped his arms around Zachary’s trembling body. “What’s wrong? Zachary, what’s wrong?”
“Matthew…. are you–are you tired…” Zachary cried so hard he could barely catch his breath, his words coming in broken pieces. “I… I’m back…”
Matthew froze. “Zachary, you-
“I saw it… I remembered… everything…”

Seeing his face flushed from crying, Matthew gripped his shoulders and gently lifted his head so their eyes met. “Zachary, don’t cry. Tell me slowly.”
“Eight years… how did you… get through it…” Zachary felt increasingly worse as he recollected his dream; tears streamed down again.
Matthew cupped his face, kissing his eyes, licking away the tears on his cheeks, his own voice thick with emotion. “It’s all over now. I waited for you.”
“How could I… forget you… I’m sorry…”
“It’s not your fault.”
At the cave entrance, Taylor had started crying too, wiping his face as he hugged his knees by the fire, his sobs coming in shaky bursts.
When Jaden returned with the shaman, he saw the scene and immediately thought something terrible had happened. Cold sweat broke out across his back as he rushed toward the cave–only to abruptly stop in his tracks.
“W–What’s going on…” Taylor sniffled as he walked over.
Jaden quickly covered his eyes and turned him around, raising his voice, “Mr. Bruce is here.”
Zachary’s lips were flushed and damp, his breathing uneven as he pulled away from Matthew. His eyes were swollen, red as plums.
Matthew stepped aside to make room, but Zachary still clung tightly to his hand.
The shaman walked over, puzzled. “Why are you crying? Does something hurt?”
Zachary shook his head. “No… I just had a dream.”
The shaman didn’t press further. After examining him, he smiled. “You’re fine now. But you’ll still need to take the medicine for a couple more days, just to be safe.”
As soon as the shaman left, Yael and Quincy arrived, each carrying a clucking beast.
Yael shook the beast–hide covering off at the entrance to clear the snow, then hung it by the fire and rubbed his hands together. “It’s freezing out there.”
Quincy turned to Jaden. “How’s your Sire doing?”
Jaden poured two bowls of hot water. “He’s awake. He’s inside with Alpha.”
Yael turned his head sharply. “Zachary’s awake?!”
Taylor grabbed Quincy’s arm, bearning. “Mr. Bruce came and said Zachary’s all better!”
Quincy finally let out a breath. “That’s good… that’s really good.”
Zachary stepped out of the inner cave and gave them a small smile. “You’re here.”
Quincy quickly walked over. “How are you feeling now?”

“Pretty good.”
Yael blinked in surprise. “Zachary, what happened to your eyes? Did Matthew hit you?”
“It’s probably just from the fever,” Zachary said, a little embarrassed to admit he had been crying, so he brushed it off.
Matthew pressed him down to sit by the fire, then went back inside and brought out another beast–hide robe, wrapping it snugly around him until only a fluffy head peeked out.
Quincy sat down beside Zachary to chat, while Taylor pulled Jaden along, chattering nonstop about everything that had happened during the salt exchange trip.
Meanwhile, Matthew and Yael worked at the cave entrance, preparing the clucking beasts.
After a while, Elias and Kyle arrived as well, carrying a large bundle of firewood and even bringing along a quacking beast.
Everyone was surprised–they didn’t live nearby.
Elias ducked under the beast–hide covering and rushed in, throwing his arms around Zachary with a bright smile. “You’re finally awake. We were all so worried. The preserved fruit cakes turned out just like you said- they’ve developed that white coating, and the pickled vegetables are ready too…”
With Elias and Taylor around, the cave quickly filled with noise and warmth once again.
