Chapter 20 A Delicacy

Zachary handed the wrapped leaves to Jaden and said, “Bring these to Taylor and the others.”

Jaden nodded and picked up the still–warm pork cracklings as he ran out.

Quincy was also preparing food for Yael. They had built a small stove outside the cave entrance and cooked there whenever the weather was good.

Taylor was currently in his beast form, lying in the sun and basking comfortably. His tail swished lazily from time to time.

Therians had excellent senses of smell. Before Jaden even got close, Taylor opened his eyes and jumped up from the ground while howling.

Seeing Jaden arrive, Taylor immediately pounced over, placing his front paws on Jaden’s shoulders while rubbing his fluffy head against his friend’s neck.

“Alright now, Taylor.” Jaden suppressed the ticklish feeling and raised the bundle in his hand, waving it in front of Taylor’s nose with a smile. “Look what I brought you.”

Taylor wagged excitedly and quickly ran back into the cave, transforming into human form to put on clothes before coming back out.

“You are here, Jaden.” Quincy greeted him while adding firewood to the stove.

“Sire asked me to bring you something,” Jaden replied while opening the leaves he was carrying, revealing a pile of pork cracklings inside.

“It smells amazing.” Quincy sniffed it and was surprised. “Jaden, what is this?”

“I know!” Taylor ran over and raised his head proudly. “These are pork cracklings! Jaden’s Sire made them. They are really delicious.” As he spoke, he picked up a piece and handed it to Quincy. “Sire, try it!”

When Quincy took a bite of it, his eyes widened in delight. The food in his mouth was crispy and full of rich meat flavor.

“Jaden, what is this made from? It’s really good.”

“Grunt–beast,” replied Jaden.

Quincy accepted the food and went into the cave before returning with some fruit. With a smile, he said, “Thank Zachary for me.”

“You don’t have to.” Jaden shook his head.

“Just take them.” Quincy ruffled the cub’s head.

When Jaden returned, Zachary had just finished cooking and was transferring the dish from the large plate of stir–fried mushrooms and meat smelled so nice that it would make one’s mouth water.

“What’s that?” Zachary noticed that Jaden was carrying something.

“It’s from Quincy,” Jaden said while spreading open the leaves. Inside were some round red fruits which looked somewhat like red dates.

Zachary picked one up to examine it and noticed that it was really red dates. He decided to steam and dry it later, as it would be perfect for making soup.

There were so many useful things in this forest, and Zachary suddenly felt like going out to gather ingredients again.

He had always enjoyed watching videos of people foraging in mountains or collecting seafood. Now, he actually had the chance to do it himself.

Thinking that Matthew probably had a larger appetite, Zachary cut several thick slices of moo beast meat. Then, he set the stone slab on the stove, first using a fattier piece of meat to render some oil. After that, he placed the thick tenderloin slices on top, slowly pan–searing them over low heat and turning them repeatedly.

When Matthew returned from his bath, he caught the delicious aroma coming from his cave from far away.

As Matthew saw white smoke drifting out slowly, he unconsciously quickened his pace..

At the cave entrance, one big figure and one small one sat beside the stove on the ground. Jaden was turning the mushrooms on the stone slab with eating sticks while Zachary directed him from the side.

The atmosphere was unusually peaceful.

Matthew paused for a moment, almost thinking he had been imagining things. If not for the two familiar faces in front of him, he might have suspected he had walked into someone else’s cave.

From the corner of his eye, Jaden noticed him and called out, “Alpha.”

Zachary also looked up and smiled. “You’re back.”

Matthew hummed in response while still holding his freshly washed clothes, which were dripping with

water.

The large stone at the cave entrance had been used by Zachary to dry mushrooms and fresh ginger for cooking. Matthew was about to look for another place to hang his clothes when he caught sight of the scene inside the cave and momentarily forgot what he was going to do.

Seeing this, Zachary quickly said, “I’ll move the things I’m drying.”

“No need.” Matthew turned and hung the clothes on the stone wall above the cave entrance.

There was a small protruding ledge there–perfect for drying things. It was just too high for Zachary to

reach, even though he had thought earlier that it would be a good place.

Then, Matthew walked into the cave. Seeing the abundant food on the table, he looked surprised. Then, he turned to Jaden and asked silently with his eyes.

Jaden answered, “Sire made it.”

“Let’s eat.” Zachary handed Matthew a pair of eating sticks.

Matthew sat down and looked at the food he had never seen before that was emitting a rich aroma. With some caution, he took a bite.

The taste was unique, unlike anything he had eaten before.

Then, Matthew looked up and saw two pairs of blue eyes across the table staring at him expectantly.

They were clearly waiting for his reaction.

Matthew and Zachary barely spoke to each other, and when they did, it was rarely pleasant. A calm atmosphere like this was extremely rare,

“It’s very good,” Matthew said. Though still a bit unaccustomed, his tone remained steady, as if making a serious evaluation.

“What food is this?” He lifted a gray–white strip from the plate and asked.

“It’s the mushroom in the stir–fried mushrooms and meat,” Zachary explained. “I made it using the mushrooms drying outside and grunt–beast meat.”

“Mushrooms?”

“I gathered them with Quincy,” Zachary said, pointing to the whole mushrooms fried beside the moo beast meat. “They look like that.”
