Chapter 214 I’m Not a Child
Jaden quickly got dressed, ran to the stove, and started heating water for washing up.
Matthew cooked while Zachary silently added firewood beneath the pot.

For breakfast, they warmed stuffed flatbreads, cooked thin congee, stir–fried shredded potatoes with meat, and made a plate of steamed egg with dill pickle.
During the meal, Matthew and Jaden kept looking at Zachary.
He asked, “What’s wrong?”
The father and son shook their heads in perfect unison. “Nothing
The snow was lighter today. When it was time to collect the food distributed by the tribe, Zachary planned to go along and take a look.
Matthew stopped him. “It’s cold. Stay home.”
‘It’s too stuffy being in the cave all the time.” Zachary put another beast–hide cloak over his clothes. “Let’s go.”
Matthew said, “There are snakes. We dug up a snake den, so a lot of snakes will be handed out today.”
Zachary’s steps paused, He took a deep breath. “It’s fine.“,
‘How about—”
Zachary directly took Matthew’s hand. “Let’s go.”
Many people had gathered in the center of the tribe. Everyone had come to join the bustle. Being cooped up in the cave for too long didn’t feel good either.
Zachary didn’t see the snakes. Instead, the huge black bear in the middle drew his attention.
‘Is that what hurt you?” Zachary’s gaze fell on the black bear’s long, sharp claws before he turned to ask Matthew.
‘Yeah.” Matthew answered very casually.
Zachary didn’t say anything else. Suddenly, he really wanted to know what bear paw tasted like.
Yael called out to Matthew, “The chief is looking for you.”
Matthew said to Zachary, “I’ll be right back.”
Zachary said, “It’s fine. Go ahead.”
He was still studying the black bear when Quincy and Elias walked over.
Both of them were surprised. “Zachary, why did you come?”

“Didn’t Matthew tell you? They’re handing out snake meat today. Aren’t you scared?”
Zachary gave a calm smile on purpose. “I’m okay.”
Elias said, “Matthew knows you’re scared of snakes, so he definitely won’t take any snake meat. But it’s lucky they hunted a black bear this time.
“There won’t be much once it’s divided among everyone, but it’ll still be enough for two meals.”
Zachary suddenly asked, “What does snake meat taste like?”
“Mm…” Elias thought about it, “A bit like clucking beast.”
“Every year, near the end of the cold season, the therians in the tribe dig up snake dens. If they’re lucky, they can even find hibernating pythons. Those have a lot of meat.”
Quincy asked, “Is there not enough food at home? My family still has some. I can share some with you.”
Zachary shook his head. “No, I was just asking.”
While the three of them were talking, the therians carried several bulging beast–hide bags over.
They untied the ropes and dumped the bags onto the ground in the center of the tribe. In an instant, dense piles of snakes spread across the ground, forming a small hill.
Zachary only glanced once before his scalp prickled. His face turned as white as the snow falling from the sky.
A broad, warm hand covered his eyes. A familiar scent surrounded him, and Zachary’s back suddenly pressed against a firm chest.
“Don’t look.” Matthew held Zachary’s wrist with his other hand, the one Zachary had tucked inside his sleeve. Then he slid down and wrapped Zachary’s hand in his palm. “Do you want to go play with Jadeņ and the others for a while?”
Matthew’s sudden move scattered quite a bit of Zachary’s fear. He laughed softly. “I’m not a child.”
୮
Matthew tilted his head and kissed Zachary’s cheek. His lips brushed over Zachary’s cold skin and stopped at the corner of his mouth.
“People will see.” Zachary was a little nervous. With his free hand, he tried to grab the hand Matthew was using to cover his eyes.
Matthew chuckled twice, then quickly licked and nipped at Zachary’s lip. The outside was cold, but the inside was wet and hot.
Zachary suddenly pressed his lips together and pushed the intruding tongue out with his own.
After teasing him enough, Matthew finally put away his shameless behavior. He turned Zachary by the shoulders so Zachary faced him. “Go wait in the cave for a while. Once we’ve collected the food, we’ll go home.”

Zachary said, “I’ll choose it.”

Matthew had completely ruled out snake meat. He thought Zachary was curious about the black bear, so he nodded. “Okay. They’re starting to line up.”
Recently, birds of prey had been watching the tribe from above. Chief Alfred gathered the therians to discuss patrol arrangements, so the food distribution was left to Bruce.
Bruce smiled and said, “Zachary, you go first.”
Zachary said, “Hm?”
“Matthew risked himself to lure this black bear out of its cave, so of course your family gets to choose first.”
“Was it… dangerous?” Zachary remembered the wounds on Matthew and asked.
“Of course. During the cold season, black bears are extremely aggressive. Their hibernation caves are often on cliffs, and the openings are narrow. Most animals wouldn’t dare go in at all.”
“Even therians won’t provoke them unless they have no other choice.”
The person beside them praised, “Matthew really is the strongest therian in our tribe.”
Zachary picked up a piece of meat from the black bear’s back, then his gaze fell on the pile of snakes on the other side.
In the tribe, each person could get several snakes.
He took a deep breath and forced his very reluctant legs to move. Step by step, he walked over. Then he opened the beast–hide bag with both hands and didn’t dare look straight at all.
Quincy and Elias quickly came forward. “Zachary, are you sure you want some?”
“Yeah.” Zachary’s smile was very strained. “Everyone says it tastes good, so I’ll try it.”
“All right, then.” Elias picked out a few of the plumpest snakes from the pile and placed them into his beast–hide bag.
