Chapter 230 Pottery

With Zachary leading the way, the Black Panther Tribe moved quickly–once they decided to do something, they acted immediately. A large group headed toward the river, digging mud with great effort and carrying it back to the tribe trip after trip.
In the center of the tribe, many large vats had already been prepared and filled with water. The dug–up mud had to be washed to remove impurities. The process wasn’t complicated, but it was exhausting. Everyone worked the entire day before finally finishing processing all the slay.
That evening, Quincy and Elias ate at Zachary’s place. The three of them worked together, and Taylor and Jaden joined in as well, making the whole cave lively and full of chatter.
The meal was impressive–stir–fried river clams with perilla leaves, hawthorn grunt–beast ribs, deep–fried small fish and shrimp, roasted rabbit meat, and wild vegetable soup. The table was packed, but everything was gone by the end of dinner.
Meanwhile, on the other side, Matthew was trying to escape from a group of bandits with his meat sandwich intact.
Yael and the others even resorted to hugging and kissing him, which disgusted Matthew so much that he reluctantly threw two of them his food before quickly climbing up a tree to hide.
Early the next morning, after breakfast, everyone in the tribe who had free time gathered in the center to play with mud.
They sat wherever they liked along rows of stone slabs, kneading and shaping the yellow–brown lumps of clay in their hands.
Zachary was the first to complete a few finished pieces. “Whatever kind of container you want, just shape it like this with the clay,” he explained while demonstrating.
Hearing this, everyone got to work seriously. After all, the task wasn’t boring at all—it was actually quite fun.
Most people made everyday items like bowls, plates, and basins. Even if the shapes weren’t perfect, it didn’t affect their practicality.

Zachary, however, had higher standards. He followed modern designs and even used a knife to carve patterns into his pieces.
By evening, the younger ones returned from hunting.
When the kids saw the adults seriously playing with mud in the center of the tribe, they immediately ran over to complain, “You don’t let us play with mud, but you’re doing it yourselves!”
“Exactly! How can you do that?”
The adults couldn’t help but laugh at the indignant little ones. “We’re working.”
“If you’re playing with mud, just say so. Stop trying to fool us!”

“Adults are the worst. It’s not like we wouldn’t let you play!”
The kids stood with their hands on their hips, speaking very seriously.

In the end, Zachary, who carried the most authority, stepped forward to explain and invited them to join.
The children eagerly gathered together and immediately started shaping things with the clay.
Taylor pulled Jaden over to Zachary and the others, crouching down to ask, “What should we make?”
Zachary raised his mud–covered hands and smiled. “Anything you like.”
Taylor and Elias had wild imaginations and instantly clicked with each other. They began excitedly sharing ideas–sun–shaped bowls, moon–shaped plates, spoons with little ears on the handles, and all sorts of strange designs. Odd as they were, when placed together, they actually looked quite unique.
From then on, Kyle never used normal tableware again. Even the washbasin at home had decorative edges.
When it came to things he was willing to do, Jaden was extremely serious–especially if it was assigned by his Şire or done together with him.
After thinking for a moment, the child picked up three lumps of clay and sat still for a long time. In the end, he made three cups. Then he took a thin stick and carefully carved Matthew and Jaden’s names along with his on each one.
These were some of the first characters he had learned.
Feeling they were a bit plain, Jaden added simple cat head drawings onto each cup. The outlines were basic, but it still took him quite a while to finish.
“Jaden, are these water cups?” Zachary leaned over and asked softly.
Jaden said they were for rinsing the mouth, and even showed how they would be placed–Sire on the left, Alpha on the right, and himself in the middle.
Zachary’s heart softened. He wrapped the child in a clean arm deeply moved.
Before heading home, Zachary took a piece of clay with him. After dinner, he sat by the fire, fully focused on molding it.
The tribe members spent most of the next day finishing all the pottery blanks. They then carefully moved them to a cool, ventilated place to dry for several days. Only after they were completely dry could they be fired.
By the time Matthew and his group returned from hunting, it was already evening. The center of the trike had just been cleaned, and people hadn’t dispersed yet.
After tasting the deliciousness of organs, the therians had brought back the entire prey this time. It would take until the next day to process everything before distributing it to the tribe.
Matthew felt that he smelled strongly of blood, so he didn’t get too close to Zachary.
Zachary, already used to it, asked his usual first question, “Did anyone get hurt?”

Yael and the others laughed. “Don’t worry, not even a scratch!”
Matthew nodded as well.
Zachary withdrew his gaze and looked at the prey. When his eyes landed on one of the moo beasts, he suddenly thought of milk. However, hunting animals like cattle and sheep alive was difficult. Maybe they could try setting traps and see if they got lucky.
Besides, the tribe would eventually need to develop livestock farming. Otherwise, the next cold season would still be hard to survive.
