Chapter 229 Something New

Jaden and Taylor still had so–called lessons to attend, so Zachary made extra meat sandwiches, carefully wrapping them in leaves and tying them up with string, preparing them for the two kids to take along.
Practical lessons took a lot of energy, so they couldn’t go hungry.
Matthew had been standing to the side the whole time, silently watching Zachary’s hands. When he saw him pack the wrapped sandwiches into Jaden’s small backpack, he suddenly said, “I’m heading out today
too.”
“What?” Zachary looked up at him.
Matthew’s lips pressed into a slight frown.
Zachary stopped teasing him. “I remember. You told me before bed.”
“I might be back tomorrow,” Matthew said, his eyes still fixed on Jaden’s backpack filled with sandwiches.
Of course, Zachary knew what he meant. After putting the bag on Jaden’s back, he looked at Matthew with a smile. “If I didn’t prepare any food for you, would you be upset?”
Matthew replied, “A little.”
Zachary laughed and poked his cheek. “Is that so? You’re practically frowning.”
He then brought over another stack of leaves and lifted the lid of a nearby pot. Inside was a neat row of meat sandwiches–bigger, fuller, clearly an upgraded version.
“How could I let you go hungry?”
Matthew’s lips returned to their usual curve, even lifting slightly. He took the string and helped Zachary pack them up.
“Is this enough?” Zachary asked.
“No need for too much,” Matthew replied. If he brought too much, Yael and the others would definitely swarm over and try every trick to get a share.
“I’m heading out now,” Jaden said. He had already gotten into the habit of saying goodbye to Zachary and Matthew before leaving each day, then went off to find Taylor.
When he reached Taylor’s cave, Yael was watering the vegetable patch outside.
Catching the scent, he instantly appeared in front of Jaden and looked at the backpack with a grin. “Jaden. what’ve you got in there? It smells pretty good.”
“This is food my dad made for me and Taylor. It’s called a meat sandwich,” Jaden answered honestly.
Yael immediately perked up. “A meat sandwich? I’ve never seen that before. Jaden, let me take a look.”
Hearing the commotion, Taylor ran out of the cave, not even bothering to wipe his mouth.

He clearly didn’t trust Yael. Covering Jaden’s backpack with both hands, he grabbed him and ran off in a flash.
“That brat,” Yael muttered, speechless. He wouldn’t even let him look. It wasn’t like he was going to steal it -well, even if he did, it’d only be a little.
Not long after Jaden left, Matthew also set out
A number of people had already gathered in the center of the tribe. The moment Matthew appeared, Yael and the others followed the scent over. It wasn’t really their fault–Zachary always came up with new kinds of food for Matthew.
Everyone had been chewing on their dry roasted meat just fine, but the moment Matthew took out his own food, the meat in everyone else’s mouths instantly lost its appeal.
Yael approached with ill intent, one hand grabbing Matthew’s shoulder while the other reached into his beast–hide bag.
Matthew grabbed Yael’s arm and squeezed hard. “Back off.”
Yael pulled his hand back, hissing dramatically as if in pain, but still leaned against Matthew. “What’s in the bag?”
Kyle chimed in, “What else could it be? It smells this good–it’s definitely something Zachary made for him.”
Daniel was extremely envious. “It’s one thing for Zachary to pack food for Jaden every day, but he even packs food for Matthew? He’s a grown man. How could he go hungry?”
“You don’t get it,” Kyle said with a grin. “This is an act of love.”
Yael extended his hand again, eager to try. “Then let’s all take a look at Zachary’s love for Matthew!”
Before he even finished speaking, the therians surrounded Matthew completely.
Matthew pressed down on his bag. “Get lost.”

Knowing they couldn’t use force, Yael and the others instantly switched tactics, putting on overly attentive expressions as they competed to massage Matthew’s shoulders.
“Just stand there today and take it easy.”
“Leave the hunting to us.”
“Wouldn’t want you getting tired, after all.”
Matthew shoved them aside, about to walk over to Donald, but then remembered that he wasn’t exactly reliable either. Despite only being in his thirties, he always acted senior, using the excuse that he had taken care of Matthew for a few years to try and share his food.
Yael and the others, of course, refused to let him go.

During the hunt, before Matthew even had a chance to act, Yael had already pinned a grunt–beast to the ground. “I got it this.”
When Matthew went after a moo beast, just as it prepared to fight back, Donald and Daniel rushed in from both sides and knocked it aside, “How dare you attack Matthew, you beast!”
Things like this kept happening again and again.
Matthew was utterly speechless. He finally couldn’t take it anymore and, during a break, gave each of Yael and the other black panthers a good beating.
Zachary hadn’t forgotten about the clay he discovered by the river the day before. After eating, sending off Jaden and Matthew, changing the water for the river clams, and laying out the processed tea leaves to dry, he went to the center of the tribe to look for the tribe leader.
Now, every time the leader saw Zachary, he looked especially kind.
It was hard to explain something like pottery–making with just words, so Zachary simply stated his intention. “I need help.”
In the tribe leader’s eyes, Zachary’s status was already on par with the great shaman. Even though he didn’t understand what it meant to fire containers, he knew one thing–he would support him unconditionally.
