Chapter 232 A Bountiful Harvest

Zachary only had a bone knife in hand, which he usually used for digging wild vegetables. Using it to dig bamboo shoots was honestly inefficient and very tiring.

As such, he turned his head and set his sights on Matthew, who was in the middle of getting dressed.

Matthew had only just pulled on half his pants before he was forced to take them off again. Transforming back into his beast form, he arched his back, swung his claws, and started digging at a bamboo shoot rapidly.

Dirt flew everywhere. Zachary quickly stepped aside, watching his big black panther with great satisfaction -clearly, all that food hadn’t been wasted.

It didn’t take long before a large spring bamboo shoot was dug out, pointed at the top, plump in the middle, and white at the base.

Zachary used the bone knife to peel away the outer layer, revealing the tender white core inside. A fresh fragrance spread into the air. He took a bite of the crisp shoot, which had a faint bitterness to it and the earthy taste of soil.

Not wanting to leave his mate alone, Matthew carried Zachary to gather the rest.

After hearing from Zachary that the shoots were edible, the subtherians eagerly joined in, snapping off the slender shoots, while the round, thick ones were left to the clawed black panthers to dig up.

Stay away from me,Matthew said, flicking Yael with his tail. He shook the dirt and grass off his face, then stuck out his tongue repeatedly, trying to spit out whatever had gotten into his mouth.

Yael had barely laughed for two seconds before Daniel suddenly bumped into him. He dropped down hard, landing right on the tip of a bamboo shoot, and instantly bared his teeth.

Daniel hadn’t meant to do it. Hearing the noise, he quickly turned back. What’s wrong?

The other subtherians all looked over at once.

IIt’s nothing,Yael said through gritted teeth, then turned and went to find Quincy.

The black panther’s fur was thick. Quincy carefully parted it and checked, but couldn’t find any wound. In the end, he simply rubbed the spot a little, and only then did Yael return to work.

By dusk, all the beasthide bags were filled with bamboo shoots. What had started as a trip to accompany their mates had somehow turned Matthew and the others into fullon pack carriers.

On the way back, they came across a green plum tree. Its dense branches were covered in small green fruits, beautiful to look at and mouthwateringly tempting.

There was only a small basket left at home, so Zachary decided to pick more.

The subtherians said the fruit tasted very sour and couldn’t understand why he wanted so many, but they still helped him gather them.

With a bountiful harvest, everyone returned to the tribe. Zachary demonstrated how to peel the bamboo shoots and carefully explained the different ways to cook them before heading home.

As it happened, the cured meat and sausages at home were ready to eat. Zachary planned to invite Yael and the others over, since they had helped prepare them.

There was no need to inform Yael and Kyle. Zachary had already told Quincy and Elias, but Matthew still needed to make a trip to notify Ethan and Daniel.

As expected, the moment Matthew talked about food, Ethan immediately got dressed and headed out, even volunteering to help get Daniel.

Matthew then went to find Bruce. When he arrived, Bruce was outside the cave grinding dried herbs, while Donald sat nearby, staring at a pot of green medicinal concoction with a troubled expression, as if he wanted to speak but couldn’t.

It’s already cold. Drink it,Bruce urged.

I’ll drink it,Donald said, as if making up his mind. He took a deep breath, lifted the bowl, pinched his nose, and prepared to gulp it down.

At that moment, Matthew spoke, Hey there, Mr. Bruce.

Donald looked as if he had just seen a savior. He immediately set the bowl down, jumped to his feet, and walked over. Matthew’s here!

Bruce looked up, thinking Zachary had sent Matthew again with something.

Matthew said, Zachary invited you to come over for/a meal tonight.

Bruce smiled faintly. Alright.

Let’s go now,” Donald said at once.

Bruce nodded. Donald visibly relaxed and cautiously asked, About that medicine

Don’t drink it for now,Bruce said, packing up the herbs in his hands. We’ll try again next time.

Okay.Donald shot Matthew a grateful look, then secretly poured the bowl of medicine behind a nearby rock.

When Matthew returned home, Kyle and the others were already squatting at the cave entrance, diligently peeling bamboo shoots.

Once the season passed, the shoots would be gone. Zachary planned to dry some into preserved bambo shoots, and also make pickled sour shoots and salted ones, so he had asked them to help peel all of them.

Taylor and Jaden’s hunting skills had improved greatly. Most of the time, they would bring prey back home. This time, they carried a quacking beast.

When Zachary went to get the cured meat, the therians all gathered around. The smoked, reddishblack food looked unusual, both in preparation and appearance, so everyone was eager to see the final result.

After washing the cured meat, Zachary sliced it thin and soaked it in water. The bamboo slices had to be boiled first, then rinsed with cold water, otherwise they would have a numbing, astringent taste.

A circle of tall, sturdy therians crowded around the stove. Some were there to learn, while others were simply greedy, wanting to catch the aroma and feast with their eyes first.

Matthew was tending the fire. Watching Zachary surrounded in the middle, he suddenly had the urge to grab a halfburning log and chase Yael and the others away.

The cured meat was first simmered briefly in water. Once the oil was hot, minced garlic, peppercorns, and dried chili bits were added and stirfried until fragrant. Then the slices of cured meat, with both fat and ean, were tossed in and stirfried, followed by the bamboo slices. A bit of seasoning and sauce were added, and just before taking it off the heat, a handful of garlic shoots was thrown in.
