Chapter 233 Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
The smell was unbelievably, overwhelmingly fragrant!

“Back up.” Matthew couldn’t stand it anymore. Afraid their droo! might drip into the pot, he picked up a firewood stick and waved it in front of them. “Move back.”
In another pot, the quacking beast stew with spring bamboo was simmering. Its rich aroma had already begun to fill the air. Taylor and Jaden added more firewood beneath it.
Zachary steamed a plate of cured sausages, then stir–fried another dish with garlic shoots and sausage, and yet another with potatoes and sausage–each portion large and hearty.
As the sky gradually darkened, everyone worked together to clean up the bamboo husks outside the cave before gathering around the stone table.
The stir–fried cured meat was savory without being greasy, the bamboo shoots were sweet and fresh with a rich meaty flavor, and the stew was deeply satisfying. It was a meal they devoured with complete enjoyment.
Before they left, Zachary gave each of them some cured meat and sausages. The therians were deeply touched. In return, they helped wash all the green plums Zachary had picked and even promised to take care of his firewood supply for a while.
Yael’s way of repaying him was the most thoughtful–he scooped Jaden up in one motion and said that Taylor had been a little lonely at night lately, so the two kids could keep each other company.
Matthew showed Yael the friendliest expression he had all day and even took the initiative to hand over the cub’s clothes.
The cave quickly fell quiet.
Zachary stepped forward and wrapped his arms around Matthew, tilting his head up to kiss him on the lips. The moment his feet left the ground, he instinctively tightened his grip around the therian’s neck, and Matthew carried him straight out of the cave.
“Where are we going?” Zachary asked, a little nervous. Was Matthew about to take him soinewhere new again?
The night wasn’t very dark. Under the moonlight, everything appeared hazy and blurry.
In one corner of the hot spring, the sound of splashing water echoed softly. The breeze stirred the surface, sending ripples against the stone walls, even making the moon’s reflection quiver.
Footsteps approached—it was others coming to bathe.
Zachary’s body tensed instantly. He looked at Matthew in alarm, not daring to make a sound.
Matthew mischievously teased him on purpose. Only when Zachary’s eyes turned red at the corners, misting with a thin layer of moisture, did he finally lean down to press a warm kiss there, then carried him away to another spot.

Zachary felt like he was going to die.
Matthew didn’t stop. Instead, he carried him through the quiet forest, as if taking a leisurely walk.
“The moon is full.”
“Want to go up a tree?”
“This grass is soft.”
“There are flowers blooming.”
“There are animals watching us.”

Usually quiet and reserved, Matthew was unusually talkative tonight.
Breathing unevenly, Zachary bit down on his shoulder in frustration. When he saw the smile at the corner of Matthew’s lips, he belatedly realized that it was supposed to be a reward.
By the time daylight fully broke, Matthew stepped out of the cave. As expected, a large pile of firewood had already been stacked at their entrance. In a good mood, he crouched down and slowly began arranging it neatly.
Zachary, while holding his waist, wanted to kick him from behind–but found he couldn’t lift his leg at all. He could only glare resentfully at Matthew’s back.
“Go cut some bamboo and wood.”
Matthew turned his head, asking what it was for.
Zachary shot him a look. “To build you a house.”
“Does it hurt a lot?” Matthew changed the subject and reached out, wanting to rub his waist
Zachary stepped back and repeated, “Go cut bamboo and wood.”
Matthew shook his head, rarely refusing his mate’s request.
Zachary explained, “I’m building a coop.”
“A coop?”
“For the clucking beasts. I’m going to raise them.”
“Really?” Matthew was still a little doubtful. After all, things had gone a bit overboard yesterday.
“Are you doing it or not?”
Matthew immediately grabbed Zachary’s hands. “I’ll do it.”

Feeling sore all over, Zachary spent the day lying flat, watching Matthew carry loads back and forth. Later, Yael and the others joined in. By nightfall, a large pile of wood and bamboo had been stacked outside the
cave.
The coop for the clucking and quacking beasts was built beside the vegetable patch, forming a rectangular enclosure. The walls were made from mud and stone, while the shelter was constructed using wood and bamboo.
The people of the tribe were curious about anything new, so they all came over to help.
As he worked, Zachary explained, “Here, do it like this–one lump of mud, one store, then stack them slowly upward.”
To keep the clucking beasts from flying off and the quacking beasts from wandering, the walls were built quite high. Wooden posts were driven into the ground to form the frame, bamboo was laid across it, and the roof was covered with branches and dry grass. The final result looked quite decent.
Everything was ready, except for the actual animals. Zachary passed that responsibility over to Matthew.
On the day they fired the pottery, the weather was perfect–sunny, dry, and windless. >
Zachary chose an open area, cleared it, then laid down a layer of dried firewood. He arranged all the clay pieces upside down in neat rows, then piled branches and dry grass over them.
They started with a small fire, then increased it, keeping it going for nearly an hour. The entire clearing was engulfed in roaring flames. Heat waves surged forward, but no one left.
When the clay turned red, Zachary directed everyone to cover it completely with leaves, damp soil, and grass ash, sealing it tightly. Then, he let it smolder før nearly another hour.
Since it needed time to cool, they would have to wait more than two more hours.
The rest of the tribe stayed to watch, but Zachary, who was used to eating lunch, went back home first. On the way, he also checked on the green plums he had preserved with salt.
