Chapter 240 A Grudge is Born

Zachary could tell Matthew was pissed, so he scratched lightly at his palm, then leaned close to his ear and murmured, “Hey, don’t be mad. I’ll trade with them for some pretty beast hides and make you new clothes. Only for you.”
Matthew’s expression softened a little. He squeezed Zachary’s fingers. Then he wrapped an arm around Zachary’s waist from behind and shot Hubert a cold sideways glance.
“You can pick first. You can bring the stuff over later,” Zachary told Hubert before heading off with Quincy to keep helping the other customers.
Hubert had barely opened his mouth when a strong hand suddenly clamped down on the back of his neck. A familiar wave of anger crashed right into him.
Horace glared down at him. “What are you doing here?”
Hubert shot to his feet at once, and his voice edged with frustration. “I’m here to trade!”
One look at his sulking expression and Horace already knew he’d gotten humbled again. He sighed inwardly, the harsh look on his expression easing a little. “What are you trading for?”
Hubert pointed casually.
Horace followed his finger, and his attention was instantly caught by the items spread across the ground.
He honestly hadn’t expected Hubert actually to have something serious on his mind for once, so he immediately sent one of their tribe members back to fetch the goods they’d brought this time.
Everyone else was busy, so unsurprisingly, Matthew, who was constantly at each other’s throats with Hubert, became the only available salesman.
Horace picked up a clay pot. “What do you want for this?”
“Already taken,” Matthew replied.
Horace pointed at another one. “What about this one?”
“Taken too.”
Horace instantly went speechless.
Hubert’s observational skills were weirdly sharp in certain areas. He let out a cold snort. “Horace, ignore him. He doesn’t get the final say.”
With the two tribes living right next to each other, Horace had always been someone with a strong sense of the bigger picture. Besides, Hubert really was the one in the wrong here.
Put myself in his shoes, and honestly? I would’ve tied Hubert up and hung him off a cliff already. So Matthew’s actually pretty decent. He’s the kind of black panther I can deal with.
Horace immediately shot him a warning glare. Hubert still wanted to say more, but the words got stuck in

his throat before he could force them out.

Horace first apologized for what Hubert had done before, then sincerely expressed that they really did want to trade.
To the therians of Beastworld, pottery was practically high–tech equipment. Horace saw the business potential in it almost immediately, so he tried negotiating with Matthew to trade for the method of making them.
But unsurprisingly, he got rejected.
Horace still refused to give up. “Your tribe can name any condition. As long as it’s something we can do.”
Matthew didn’t hold back either. Arms folded across his chest, he said flatly, “Hubert’s tiger hide.”
The expression on Horace’s expression froze for a second. “You’re joking.”
‘Aren’t you the one who said any condition?” Matthew said like he was talking about something completely ordinary.
Horace glanced over at Hubert and sighed inwardly.
Hubert really knows how to pick the wrong sub–therian to fall for. Well, great. Guess this grudge is officially permanent
now.
Hubert met Horace’s complicated look with pure disbelief. “Horace, you seriously want my tiger hide? Horace? Horace!”
Horace pressed a hand to his forehead. “Shut up.”
Matthew suddenly spoke up, “Is he really your brother?”
“Yeah.” Horace looked like he regretted admitting it. Right now, he honestly wanted to go back and ask Alpha and Sire if they’d secretly picked up some random cub outside.
Meanwhile, Hubert was still trapped in his own tragic fantasy about Horace wanting his beast hide. Misery practically radiated off him. “Horace, are you serious? Horace…”
୮
Horace looked thoroughly done with him. “Yeah, I’ll slaughter you later and send it over.”
Hubert instantly went quiet.
Matthew didn’t say anything, but the look on his expression carried a whole lot of meaning.
Horace piled the things he’d picked out together. “That’s all.”
Matthew turned to get Zachary to settle the trade since what they exchanged usually wasn’t his call to make.
The White Tiger Tribe really did have a ridiculous amount of good stuff. Even their beast hides were premium stock, with all kinds of varieties, thick and thin alike. Zachary was extremely satisfied with the trade.

Just as Horace was about to leave, he realized Hubert was still standing there.
“Horace, you-”

Horace finally snapped and smacked him again. “You think I’d trade your beast hide for supplies? What the hell do you take me for?”
“Then you-”
Horace felt a headache coming on. “The second we get back, I’m dragging you to the shaman to see what the hell’s wrong with you!”
Hubert lowered his head and stopped talking.
The stronger beast tribes usually traded with beast hides, meat, arfa crafted tools. Smaller tribes with weaker combat ability mostly traded gathered goods instead.
Zachary was finally seeing just how wild this world was. There were crisp giant radishes, bright green chives, bitter melon, spinach, and more.
Since every tribe lived in different environments, there were also all kinds of early–ripened fruits piled everywhere, colorful and bursting with juice.
By dusk, everything the Black Panther Tribe had brought was completely traded away. In its place were heaps of vegetables and fruit, along with stacks upon stacks of beast hides.
By the noisy riverside, a rich aroma drifted through the air with the wind. Yael bent down, lifted the lid off the pot, and poked the smoked meat inside with a knife.
The nearby Red Panda Tribe and Vulture Tribe both turned toward the smell at the same time, craning so hard they practically looked ready to climb into the pot. The drool hit instantly and there was no stopping it after that.
