Chapter 248 Nice Day

Matthew jolted upright and clamped down on Zachary’s wrist, a low, rough breath slipping out of his throat.
Just as a solid, warm body was about to press in, Zachary hurriedly propped up his knec against Matthew’s chest and said softly, “Matthew, I’m hungry. Really hungry.”
The cave fell quiet for a few seconds. Matthew bit him precisely at the side of the neck, then let go and rolled off the bed.
Zachary heard the sound of clothes being put on. He sat up and reached out into the dark, his hands feeling forward. “Where are you going?”
Matthew casually wrapped a piece of beast hide around his waist. “There’s food in the pot. I’m going to heat it up.”
“I’ll go with you,” Zachary said as he started shifting toward the edge of the stone bed.
“No need. It’ll be quick.” A pair of strong hands pushed him back down.
“Don’t make too much. I won’t finish it.”
“Mm.”
The door creaked open, followed by the crackling of burning firewood. Firelight spilled in from the cave entrance, and the shadows on the stone walls flickered back and forth.
Zachary sat cross–legged on the bed, thinking about how to make candles. Now that the weather was warm, they didn’t need a fire at night, but the cave staying pitch dark still wasn’t convenient.
When Matthew came back, he was carrying a large plate. On it were two peeled eggs, a steamed sweet potato, and mushrooms stir–fried with meat.
There was a table in the cave too. Zachary pulled his clothes around himself and moved over as soon as he caught the smell. “Smells so good.”
After setting the food down, Matthew went to pour himself a glass of water. “Can you see?”
“Yeah. The fire outside is bright enough.” Zachary took a big bite of the mushrooms and meat with the eggs, completely satisfied. “So good. Really good.”
Matthew sat beside him without saying a word, just watching him eat, his expression looking even more pleased than Zachary’s.
“Oh, right, Matthew. Help me get some animal suet tomorrow,” Zachary said, trying to describe it clearly. “The white stuff inside their belly, around the kidneys. Big chunks of it. Fatty meat works too. The fattier, the better.”
Matthew nodded. “Alright.”
Zachary smiled. “You don’t even ask what I need it for?”

“What for?”
“For candles. That way we’ll have light at night.”
“You want me to help?”
“Of course.”
Zachary, now full and content, settled into Matthew’s arms, shifting around until he found the most comfortable spot. He closed his eyes and fell asleep quickly.
It was another nice day, and Zachary stretched before walking out of the cave to wash up.
Matthew and Jaden were already there, squatting by the water basin. The hair at the back of their heads bounced as their toothbrushes moved side to side.
Zachary picked up his cup. Matthew and Jaden automatically shifted apart, leaving him in the middle spot.
Tooth powder really worked better than wood. It was easier to use, didn’t tire out his jaw, and had a fresh
taste.
After washing up, Zachary told Matthew to move the wooden rack out of the cave and lay the beast–hide mats from the bed out in the sun.
Jaden went nearby, cut a big bundle of grass, and was feeding the rabbits. Then Yael came over, carrying a
basket.
Taylor ran in front, looking excited. His voice came before he even arrived. “Zachary! Come see what we brought you.”
Zachary walked over and saw a basket of chicks. They were round, yellow–brown, huddled together, chirping nonstop.
Yael handed it over. “We found them this morning when Taylor and I were out collecting firewood. Here, they’re perfect for you to raise.”
୮
Zachary immediately took it and called out to Matthew. They planned to split the animal pen in half, with half for rabbits and half for chickens.
They got straight to work, and Yael joined in.
The two cubs squatted on the ground, occasionally poking the chicks gently with their fingers.
Taylor asked, “What do they eat?”
Jaden said, “Worms, probably.”
“Where are we supposed to catch worms?”
“We can dig up the soil by the creek. There are long thin worms in there.”

“Then we’ll go later and cut some fresh grass for the long–eared beast.”
“Okay.”
The wooden divider went up quickly Once the chicks were put down, they started curiously pecking and looking around. Some of them spotted the rabbits through the gap and got startled, flapping their tiny wings and scrambling backward.
Zachary took two large strips of smoked meat and a few pieces of smoked ham from the stove area and handed them to Yael. “Eat first. Come back for more if you need.”
Yael pretended to refuse. “This is too much. No need, really.”
Matthew said, “If he doesn’t want it, forget it.”
Yael immediately caught it. “Alright, thanks then!”
Zachary watered the vegetables in the small garden and got ready to make breakfast. Matthew headed to the river with a basket of their family’s dirty clothes.
Because Zachary liked things clean and changed clothes often, the laundry basket was always piled higher
than most.
However, Matthew seemed to enjoy it. He squatted there, first laying the mate’s clothes flat on a rock. Then he crushed soapberry fruit with both hands to work up foam, spread it evenly, and slowly scrubbed it.
His process and technique were even more meticulous than those of many sub–therians in the tribe.
