After washing and blanching the spinach, it was chopped fine, mixed with beaten eggs, and spread into a thin, evenly cooked omelet. The shredded potatoes were blanched, then tossed cold for a crisp, refreshing bite. A pot of tender mushroom and spring bamboo shoot soup was also simmered.
Zachary had just set the meal out when Matthew came back carrying a basket, water still dripping steadily from the bottom.
Taylor and Jaden also returned, each holding a bundle of leaves in their dirty hands. The moment they got home, they rushed straight to the chicken coop.
Zachary leaned in, and the sight of the tightly tangled mass of earthworms sent goosebumps up his arms.
He suddenly thought chickens could eat plants, too. It would be healthier and more eco–friendly.
Taylor and Jaden leaned against the coop wall, swinging long earthworms in their hands. The chicks stretched their necks and pecked at them excitedly.
Zachary helped Matthew hang up the laundry, then called the two cubs to wash their hands for dinner.
A rolled omelet with chilled potato salad, paired with a bowl of fresh spring bamboo shoot soup, tasted absolutely amazing.
With spring in full swing, Zachary thought back to the wild ducks he had seen by the river during a previous trip. There were nests full of eggs along both banks by now.
Plus, I heard the team the tribe sent to the merfolk tribe to trade for salt is coming back soon. I feel bad for the ducks, but salted duck eggs are just too good.
Zachary thought about it for a moment, then asked, “Matthew, do you have any free time lately?”
“Where do you want to go?”
“To look for quacking beast eggs.”
“Today the tribe is going to distribute the trade goods. I can take you tomorrow.”
“Alright.”
Taylor immediately grabbed Jaden’s hand. “Can Jaden and I come too? We’re the best at finding quacking beast eggs!”
Zachary’s eyes curved as he smiled. “You two might have a pretty hard time with it, though.”
At that, Taylor shook his head so hard it looked like a rattle. “Not hard at all. We love doing work.”
After breakfast, Matthew headed to the tribe center first. During the trading gathering, many goods were

brought back, especially meat, and they all needed to be quickly cut into chunks so tribe members could take their share.
As the sun rose, the temperature slowly climbed. Matthew took off his outer coat, leaving only a light, soft deerskin shirt.
He crouched in front of a grunt–beast, rolling his sleeves up to his elbows and carefully trimming the white fat with a bone knife, with piles already stacked beside him.
Yael came over. “Are you out of oil at home? You don’t need that much, do you?”
“Zachary needs it,” Matthew said without looking up. “For making candles.”
Yael’s interest was piqued right away. “What does the candle taste like? Is it good?”
“Why are you only thinking about eating?” Matthew glanced at his stomach. “You’ll slow down if you get fat. You won’t even be able to outrun a grunt–beast by then.”
Yael immediately lifted the hem of his shirt and tightened his stomach to make his abs more obvious. “I’m in great shape!”
Matthew was completely speechless at how he looked like he was about to press his abs into his face. He grabbed a bone knife and held it between them. “Back off.“,
Yael shot back, “You should worry about yourself first. Zachary cooks too well. Once you turn into a fat panther, the other therians will be lining up to take your place. You’ll be homeless by then. Maybe I’ll take you in for a while.”
“Get lost.” Matthew lifted his leg to kick him, but Yael dodged it with a quick move.
When Zachary came over, he carried a bamboo tube with a small opening cut into it and sealed with a wooden plug, making it easy to carry water.
“Are you thirsty?” He crouched down beside Matthew and brought it to his mouth. “Drink.”
Matthew’s hands were greasy at the moment, so he simply opened his mouth and took several big gulps while Zachary held it there for him.
Water dripped down the corner of his lips and was quickly wiped away.
Zachary blinked, expectant. “How is it?”
“Good.” Matthew thought for a moment. “Sweet and a little sour.”
Zachary looked a bit pleased. “I boiled it with green plums and honey, then chilled it in cold water. I think I saw some lemons in the fruit pile, and we still have tea leaves at home. When we get back, I’ll make you something even better.”
Ever since he confessed, Zachary had started casually slipping in modern terms. Matthew and Jaden were already used to it, and they had even picked up quite a few themselves.

Yael and the others caught every word clearly. Their eyes were locked on the green bamboo tube, and their throats suddenly felt dry.
Zachary seemed to notice. He smiled at them and pointed toward the baskets Jaden and Taylor were holding not far away.
Yael and the others immediately understood. The baskets that had been used for food now held several bamboo tubes filled with green plum honey water.
Quincy, Elias, and the two cubs were already happily drinking nearby.
After such a long stretch of work, a big gulp of ice–cold, tangy–sweet fruit tea hit the spot and instantly revived them.
Bruce, who had been talking to Alfred, was already there in the blink of an eye.
He smiled, picked up a bamboo tube, nodded at Zachary, and mouthed, “Thank you.”
