Yael bent one knee and lowered his body. Quincy climbed onto his back with practiced ease. Then Quincy turned and looked at Zachary, who was still standing there. “Aren’t you coming?”
Zachary lifted his head and stared at the tall black panther in front of him. For a moment, he didn’t know what to do.
Matthew probably didn’t want him riding on his back.
Zachary hesitated before speaking. “Maybe I should just walk.”
The black panther stopped. His dark eyes lowered slightly.
Quincy reminded him, “We might go a bit farther today. Walking will be slow.”
For the sake of his forest treasure hunting trip, Zachary finally gathered his courage. He asked in a small voice, “Um, Matthew, is it okay if you carry me for a bit? If you don’t want to, that’s fine. I can-”
Before he finished speaking, Matthew slowly lowered his body. His back formed a steady, smooth curve.
“You’re letting me get on?”
The black panther turned his head slightly. His golden eyes looked at Zachary. His tail swept lightly across the ground.
The meaning was obvious.
Zachary walked over to Matthew and tried to copy the way Quincy climbed up earlier. However, the black panther’s fur was too soft and smooth, almost like silk.
Just as expected, he couldn’t get up. When he slipped down, he even pulled out a few strands of Matthew’s fur
Zachary quickly hid his hand behind his back. He felt a little guilty. “Sorry about that.”
Jaden and Taylor both turned to look at Zachary.
Jaden even spoke up. “Sire, you can step on me to get up.” After saying that, he shifted into his black panther form.
Zachary pressed a hand to his forehead.
Stepping on a cub feels wrong.
Matthew didn’t seem to mind. Maybe it was just hard to read expressions on an animal’s face. He bent his front legs and knelt down. His stomach almost touched the ground.
Yael raised an eyebrow and watched Matthew’s actions with interest.
Zachary felt very touched. He immediately used both hands and feet to climb up. This time, he managed to get on quickly.

The experience felt completely new to him. Zachary felt shocked. The fur under him was thick and soft. When the black panther stood up, Zachary suddenly rose higher off the ground. His view opened up right
away.
Zachary quickly leaned forward and hugged the panther’s back. His fingers sank into the thick fur. Warm body heat slowly spread through it.
The two strong black panthers ran quickly through the dense forest. The wind rushed past Zachary’s ears. His hips stayed pressed against the panther’s back. He could clearly feel the smooth movement of Matthew’s muscles under his skin as he ran.
The rushing, weightless feeling made Zachary both excited and nervous. His heart beat faster. His hands tightened around the panther’s shoulders.
The areas close to the tribe had already been picked clean. Because Yael and Matthew were with them, Quincy and Zachary decided to try their luck in the mountains farther away.
Zachary worried that Jaden and Taylor might fall behind. He kept turning his head to check on them. However, he soon realized the two little ones were running pretty fast.
Matthew ran very steadily. When they moved through the forest, he even avoided sharp bushes on purpose Zachary didn’t feel any strong bumps at all on his back.
After getting used to the speed, Zachary slowly relaxed. Riding on the black panther and feeling lifted off the ground made him even more excited.
After they traveled some distance away from the tribe, the two black panthers gradually slowed down. Their steps became steady and light. This gave Zachary and Quincy time to observe the plants around them.
They stopped halfway to gather some mushrooms. They also found some tasty fungi growing on a rotting tree trunk.
Zachary worried the three of them might pick poisonous mushrooms. He carefully showed them how to tell the edible ones apart. After that, he checked everything inside the beast–hide bags. Only then did he feel relieved.
Among the thick plants, a bright red color caught Zachary’s attention. He gently patted the black panther under him and pointed toward the front. “Matthew, I want to go check over there.”
It was a tall jujube tree growing on a slope. The branches were full of fruit. The red jujubes almost covered the green leaves.
Quincy said, “Those are stonepit fruits. They’re too small. They won’t fill you up. If we pick too many, they’ll just spoil.”
Zachary said, “I have a way to store stonepit fruits until the cold season.”
“Really?”
Zachary nodded. “Don’t worry.”
They didn’t need to pick the red dates one at a time. Yael and Matthew shifted back into human form and
put on their beast–hide clothes. They picked up a long tree branch from the ground and quickly climbed up the tree. Then they used the stick to hit the branches full of fruit.

Ripe red dates immediately started falling like rain.
Taylor got very excited. He jumped up and down with his hands raised.

Zachary and Quincy crouched on the ground and picked up the fruit. They put them into the beast–hide bags. The two cubs quickly grabbed a bag cach and came over to help.
When Matthew and Yael felt they had knocked down enough fruit, they climbed down from the tree.
Before long, they filled two large beast–hide bags.
Zachary looked up at the sun. It was only noon. He chewed on a red date in his hand. It was crisp and sweet He couldn’t help thinking how convenient it was to go out with Matthew.
He barely had to walk. He also didn’t need to do any climbing.
Jaden and Taylor were full of energy. They ran around nearby and chased each other. They had a great time. They even scared several birds off the trees.
After eating too many dates, Zachary’s throat started to feel dry. He looked around.
Quincy asked, “What’s wrong?”
Zachary licked his dry lips. “I’m a little thirsty. Is there a stream or river nearby?”
