“Eat a fruit first.” Quincy said. He took out a big red fruit from the beast-hide bag. “The water source is still some distance from here.”
Zachary took it and bit into it. The fruit had plenty of juice, so it helped quench his thirst for the time being.
Not far away, Matthew glanced over a couple of times. After a short while, he walked over while holding a folded leaf shaped like a funnel.
“For me?” Zachary looked at the clear water inside the leaf. He sounded a little surprised.
“Yeah.”
“Thanks.” Zachary held it up and took a big drink. The water tasted sweet and fresh. It didn’t taste like stream water or river water. “Where did you get this water?”
Yael walked over as well and handed the leaf to Quincy. “It’s taken from a water tree.”
“A water tree?” Zachary found that interesting.
Quincy explained, “This kind of plant has hollow branches. It stores rainwater inside when it rains.”
“Oh, I see.” After Zachary finished drinking, he felt much more refreshed.
“Sire!” Taylor ran over with an excited look on his face. “There are sour fruits over there.”
Jaden followed behind him. He placed the fruit he had just picked in front of Zachary.
Wild berries!
Zachary’s eyes lit up. The fruits were bright red and very tempting.
He quickly stood up and followed the kids forward.
The wild berry tree wasn’t tall, but its branches were thick and full. Round red wild berries crowded the branches in clusters. They looked beautiful.
Zachary stood on his toes and picked one. He put it into his mouth. The outer skin tasted a little bitter. However, the inside was soft, sweet, and sour.
Neither the sub-therians nor the therians liked eating this fruit very much. It had too many seeds, very little juice, and it was sour. Quincy noticed that Zachary seemed to like it a lot, so he came over to help pick some as well.
Taylor and Jaden climbed straight up the tree. Compared to eating, they seemed to enjoy picking the fruit more. The two kids moved quickly through the branches and leaves, and their movements were very nimble.
The two kids handled the higher branches. Zachary and Quincy picked the lower ones. Yael and Matthew took care of the middle.

Chapter 28 A Day of Foraging
With everyone working together, they picked the fruit very quickly.

Zachary looked at the wild berries filling the beast-hide bag. He felt completely satisfied. His eyes curved into a smile. He couldn’t help whispering, “It would be perfect if we had some sugar.”
He could make candied wild berries. Wild berry cake would work too. If he added some apples, he could even make apple-wildberry strips. Just thinking about it made his mouth water.
Matthew stood nearby. Suddenly, he lifted his head and stared straight at Zachary.
“What is it?” Zachary felt a little uncomfortable from the stare.
“Sugar…” Matthew repeated the word. His golden eyes flicked with sudden shock.
Zachary looked at him nervously. “Are you okay?”
Matthew took a big step toward Zachary. He lowered his head. His voice carried a strange urgency. “What is sugar?”
Zachary felt uneasy. His fingers gripped the edge of the beast-hide bag as he explained softly, “Sugar is a sweet kind of food. It usually comes in solid pieces. It tastes really good.”

“It’s also used for seasoning,” Zachary said while digging carefully. “It’s similar to the yellow root I dug up that day.” that
The white round bulbs looked a bit like garlic. They came out with damp soil attached to them, and each one stayed intact.
Zachary planned to bury the wild scallions in the soil near the cave. That way, they could be kept for a long
time.
After hearing Zachary explain it, Quincy immediately started helping him dig. In the past, he might have doubted Zachary a little. However, after eating Zachary’s cooking a few times, everyone trusted him a lot with food.
Yael crouched down, too. He pulled up a bunch and sighed in amazement. “Zachary, how do you many things we’ve never heard of?”
know SO
Zachary answered without changing his expression. “Maybe I’m just smart. I just kept it hidden before and didn’t tell you.”
Yael clicked his tongue twice. “I really couldn’t tell before. That’s impressive.”
The wild scallions had a lot of dirt on their roots. Zachary didn’t want to dirty the beast-hide bag, so he carried them over to the rocky riverbank to wash them.
He had just crouched down when another figure appeared in the reflection on the water.
Matthew grabbed a handful of wild scallions and dipped them into the water. He swished them back and forth until the roots turned clean and white. Then he pulled them out.
“You can put them here,” Zachary said.
He took the cleaned wild scallions from Matthew and placed them on a dry rock so the water could drain off.
