Chapter 291 His Missing Teeth

When Jaden noticed the blood near the corner of Taylor’s mouth, he was startled. Are you alright? What happened?

Taylor had been bottling everything up, but as soon as Jaden questioned him, he burst into loud sobs. pressing both palms tightly over his lips.

Let me take a look,Jaden insisted.

Taylor simply shook his head over and over.

If you don’t stop crying, everyone will come over here,” Jaden cautioned. Just tell me what happened.

Taylor’s eyebrows sagged downward as if he were on the verge of death. You’ve got to swear you won’t make fun of me.

Fine. I promise I won’t laugh.

Then Jaden saw it. Taylor’s two straight front teeth were missing, leaving a very noticeable empty space. Jaden exhaled. Those teeth were already loose. My sire said this is just part of losing your baby teeth.

It looks terrible! What am I supposed to do? The air gets into the gap, and my words come out all whistling -this is the worst!

th

New ones will come in soon,Jaden said, squeezing his lips together to stay composed. And honestly, it’s not ugly.”

Taylor wiped away his tears. Then why do you keep staring at my mouth?

The moment Taylor’s tongue slipped through the gap, Jaden completely cracked up. He turned his head away fast and gave his arm a hard pinch.

You are making fun of me!Taylor stamped his foot angrily and spun around to leave.

Jaden ran after him. I wasn’t laughing! I promise I won’t make fun of you!.

By the time lunch break arrived, Taylor was still upset.

Jaden took a sweet piece of fruit from his bag and held it out. Here, have this.

Taylor folded his arms, wearing a deeply offended look. My teeth are gone, and you expect me to chew on fruit?

Jaden quietly withdrew his hand.

Taylor kept his mouth tightly shut and faced away, crouching beneath a tree with his head lowered. The shadow of the branches loomed over him like a dark cloud, making his petite frame look even more pitiful.

Jaden brought out the bone knife Matthew had given him and carefully cut the fruit into small bits. He placed them on a leaf and extended it toward Taylor.

He knelt down and said earnestly, I’m sorry.”

Taylor looked up, his face all wrinkled. Don’t ever laugh at me again.

Jaden nodded and gave him a piece. It’s really sweet. Give it a try.

Taylor accepted the piece and tossed it into his mouth. Since his only usable teeth were at the sides, his cheeks puffed up just like a squirrel storing nuts.

Other cubs were shedding their baby teeth too, but for most, it happened one at a time, making it hardly obvious. Their front teeth could fall out in shifts.

But Taylor was crushed when he discovered that even taking a sip of water meant it would just leak righ back out.

What should I do? It’s so hideous! Why did both have to come out at the same time?

Why couldn’t they have fallen out during the cold season like yours did? Everyone stays indoors then, so no one would see.”

A thought struck Taylor out of nowhere. He seized Jaden’s hand. Do you think we can stick these back into my mouth?

Jaden caught the frantic look in Taylor’s eyes and said, Come on, let’s go track them down.

They didn’t hesitate for a second. The pair raced back to the field where they’d been hunting baa beasts and started scrambling on their hands and knees through the grass. Before long, they spotted two tiny, blocky, pearlywhite teeth.

Taylor carefully scooped them up, and for the first time, a faint smile crept across his face. But the moment his lips parted, he slapped them shut again.

The draft against his gums felt weird, and his tongue suddenly seemed way too exposed.

Once Jaden had rinsed off the teeth, he meticulously coated the roots with a gooey, heavy layer of tree resin.

Taylor eagerly opened his mouth wide.

Within just one second of the two front teeth returning to their empty spots, they came loose and tumbled right back out again.

Taylor dropped his gaze to the teeth resting in his palm. His eyes quickly grew damp and red.

Jaden made another frantic attempt to reinsert them. Relax, let’s try once more.

But they fell out again as soon as anything touched them/Even left completely alone, they wouldn’t stay put for longer than two seconds.

Taylor’s eyebrows scrunched into a tight knot, and tears started rolling down his cheeks.

Panic surged through Jaden. Don’t swallow those! Spit them out!

Furious, Taylor hurled the teeth into the distance. For the rest of the afternoon, he stayed gloomy.

Whenever another cub came up to talk, he either clamped a hand over his mouth or just stayed completely

quiet.

The boy who never stopped chattering had gone mute, and the mute made Jaden do all the talking in his place.

As evening approached, Zachary began busying himself around the stove. He prepared a large pot of passion fruit sour beef soup and fried up some stuffed eggplant and mushrooms. But even after the sun ha set, Jaden still hadn’t returned.

Upon arriving at the market, he caught sight of Matthew among the crowd. It was then he learned that the cubs would be arriving a day later than planned because their intended location had been/switched.

Naturally, no food was left uneaten. Matthew’s appetite was enormous, and he devoured every scrap of meat and drop of broth.

By the light of a single candle, Zachary continued crafting his makeshift bow and arrows. The bow came from supple tree limbs, the string from tightly braided animal sinew, and the arrowheads were whittled down to sharp tips. Those long clucking beast tail feathers he’d gathered earlier turned out to be perfect for stabilizing the arrows.

Though the process looked straightforward, doing it properly proved incredibly difficult. Getting an arrow to launch was just the beginning. The true difficulty lay in getting it to fly both far and accurately.

Matthew sat beside him. Whether it was some deeprooted instinct surfacing or just a natural talent for weaponry, as he observed Zachary’s movements, he started picking up the skills too.
