Chapter 296 A Busy Market
Jaden snapped at itChonk, stop that!”

Zachary clearly inherited his odd talent for naming animals from his grandina. Names like “Chonk” sat comfortably alongside “Molly,” “Rusty, and “Lucky,” as if they all belonged in the same category of effortless randomness.
He had only tossed the name out casually, but the boy must have taken it as proof of affection from Zachary toward the animal. That was enough for him to adopt it instantly–and from that moment on, the name stuck without question.
The moo beast dipped its head and gently rubbed against Jaden’s palm, letting out a soft, content “moo.”
Zachary didn’t lose track of the main issue. He asked Jaden whether Chonk could be used to drive the stone mill.
Jaden gave Chonk a light pat on the head. “Put in effort, and you’ll be rewarded with fruit.”
The little moo beast seemed to grasp the idea. It settled into position obediently, showing no resistance to the harness and even lowering its head as if cooperating on purpose.
Jaden guided it around the mill twice. The stone grinder began to rotate steadily, producing a rhythmic grinding sound as pale yellow soybean milk slowly trickled down the groove.
After a short while, Jaden offered the moo beast a piece of fruit. Once it finished eating, it resumed walking. After repeating the process a few times, it caught on to the routine and began moving with noticeably more energy.
Even though he was still young, Jaden worked with focus and speed. With his help, a large basin of smooth, steaming soft curd was finished before midday.
Zachary prepared both sweet and savory toppings, then loaded everything onto the cart.
A large basin of lemon–marinated, boneless chicken feet sat ready as well. The night before, Matthew, Yael, and the others had been crouched over their work for hours, carefully stripping every bone out with bone knives. After being submerged in a cold, tangy marinade, the chicken feet had fully absorbed the flavors and turned richly seasoned and ready to serve.
Zachary and Jaden pushed the cart toward the market. As soon as they arrived, people immediately gathered around them.
The tribe members were as friendly as ever. After complimenting Zachary’s new hairstyle, they helped carry supplies and set up the stall. Once they tasted the new dish, their expressions brightened even more.
Taylor came running over with a kite in his hands, his cheeks flushed and glistening with sweat. “Jaden, why are you so late? I was just about to go find you.
“Zachary, your hair looks really nice!”
“Ooh, what’s that?” The little food–loving boy immediately noticed something unfamiliar and stood there holding a bowl, eyes shining with curiosity.

Zachary chuckled and handed out two bowls of soft curd along with a plate of lemon chicken feet. “Go enjoy it with Jaden.”
Taylor grinned, showing his small canine teeth. “Okay!”
A few outsiders soon caught the aroma and rushed over in groups. Zachary was quickly overwhelmed by the crowd. Fortunately, Quincy arrived not long after, and the two cubs finished eating before hurrying back to help.
“Sire, should I add this?”
“Just a little.”
“Sire, here’s more.
“Sire, this one’s done.”
Zachary felt slightly disoriented. Jaden seemed different today–he was speaking far more than usual.
Another therian stepped forward, smiling as he looked at Zachary. “I’ll take a savory bowl.”
Zachary served him. “Alright.”
The man suddenly leaned in closer, eyes bright with expectation. “Are you mated?”
The noise around them was too loud, and Zachary didn’t catch the question clearly. “What did you say?”
In an instant, Jaden’s gentle demeanor vanished.
His expression turned sharp and cold as he glared at the therian, hostility unmistakable. “He’s my sire. My alpha is Matthew.”
The sudden icy tone made the therian pause. He scratched his head awkwardly. “Oh… right, I got it.”
Without another word, Jaden ignored him, scooped a large spoonful of chili oil into the bowl, and passed it over with a blank expression. “Here.”
At Quincy’s stall, Taylor was even more protective.
The moment he noticed anyone showing interest in his sire, he would immediately puff up and threaten to call Yael over.
In this world, therians were plentiful while sub–therians were rare. Courtship was direct and instinct- driven. If someone liked another person, they said it outright. Challenges and physical contests were common, but rejection was generally accepted without resentment.
Since a sub–therian’s choice was final, boundaries were rarely crossed.
When Daniel and the others finished their tasks, they hurried over as soon as they spotted Zachary.
Daniel held his bowl and leaned forward curiously. “What is this?”

Taylor blinked innocently. “It’s soft cheese curd, and those are lemon boneless chicken feet.”
Daniel blurted out without thinking, “It’s all white and jiggly–it really looks like animal brains.”
Zachary froze mid–motion, spoon suspended in the air. “Can we please not describe it like that?”
Yael pushed Daniel aside and grabbed a full bowl of the curd. Sitting down on a nearby rock, he began eating eagerly. Paired with the spicy–sour chicken feet, he looked completely satisfied.
Seeing the stock running low, Zachary started packing up the remaining portions for his family.
When Matthew arrived, he saw Zachary sitting under a tree with the cubs. Sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting shifting patterns over him. His pale blue–white hair moved softly in the breeze, and his eyes curved warmly as he laughed.
Zachary rose in a hurry and made his way toward him. To Matthew, Zachary seemed almost unreal in that light–like he was radiating a soft glow that made everything else fade around him.
