They steamed sweet potatoes and purple sweet potatoes, mashed them into a smooth paste, then mixed in tapioca starch. The dough was kneaded until smooth, rolled into long ropes, and cut into bitesized pieces.

Once cooked, the little chewy sweet potato bites were rinsed in cold water, which gave them an even bouncier texture.

Milk and tapioca starch were gently stirred over low heat until they thickened into a soft, chewy milk custard. It was poured into a bowl of brown sugar syrup, then topped with chewy sweet potato bites, tapioca pearls, and a variety of sweet toppings.

Taylor and Jaden helped the whole time. The moment they tasted the finished dessert, both cubs were completely stunned.

Spoonful after spoonful disappeared into their mouths. Neither of them could stop eating. Their little bellies ended up round and full, yet they still wanted another bowl.

The harvested rice was carried to the center of the tribe and spread out in a thin layer to dry. The sun beat down mercilessly, and within a day or two, the grain was completely dry.

Toward evening, Zachary went over to check on it. The rice was ready to be husked, so he joined the tribe members in gathering it into piles. Before they could move everything into the cave, however, the weather suddenly

ned.

Dark storm clouds rolled across the sky at an alarming speed. Fierce winds howled through the forest, whipping the treetops back and forth.

Everyone hurried to carry the rice into the caves. The cubs who had been playing nearby rushed over to help as well.

Blinding streaks of lightning ripped across the horizon. Thunder rumbled a moment later, loud enough to shake the ground beneath their feet. When they looked up, it felt as though the end of the world was approaching. The wind raged wildly, and darkness swallowed the sky.

Zachary froze for a second. His chest tightened.

Jaden ran over and grabbed his hand. Sire, it’s going to rain. Let’s go home.

Oh, right.

The moment the cave entrance was sealed shut, rain came crashing down from the sky. Within seconds, everything beyond the cave blurred behind a curtain of water.

The therians sprinted through the storm in a panic, drenched and disheveled.

Zachary and Jaden hurried home as well. By the time they reached their cave, they were soaked from head to toe, looking as though they had just climbed out of a river.

There was no time to go inside. The two of them immediately started herding the chickens, ducks, and

The rainy season storms in this world were especially violent. Worried that the wooden shelters might not hold up against the weather, Matthew had led the therians to dig another cave beside the cattle pen some time ago. Now it was finally proving useful.

Lightning flashed across the sky as thunder roared overhead and rain poured down in sheets.

Matthew was still out hunting and had not returned yet. Zachary stood at the entrance, staring toward the distant mountains.

The rain only grew heavier. He and Jaden blocked the entrance with stones. After lighting a candle, a faint golden glow spread through the dim cave.

Meanwhile, deep within the dense jungle, a group of soaked black panthers raced through the relentless downpour. Their usually fierce eyes were narrowed to slits, and even their mouths stayed firmly shut.

After dinner, Zachary told Jaden to get some sleep. The cub insisted he was not tired, so the two of them sat on a grass mat and chatted.

No sound ever came from the cave entrance.

Eventually, the cub could not stay awake. Curled against Zachary’s chest, he nodded off little by little.

Zachary carefully carried him deeper into the cave and left two candles burning.

The thunder never stopped. Its relentless rumbling left everyone on edge.

Zachary woke up several times throughout the night. Now and then, he thought he heard someone knocking outside the cave. But whenever he went to check, it turned out to be nothing more than the wind howling outside.

Around dawn, still half asleep, he heard the knocking again. Assuming it was just the wind, he ignored it.

A few seconds later, the sound stopped.

He lay there for a while before finally sitting up. The candle had already burned out, leaving the cave dim and shadowy. Still groggy, he felt his way to the entrance. The moment he opened the door, a blast of rain hit him square in the face and jolted him awake.

The rain was coming down hard. Zachary wiped the water from his face and leaned out to look around. Seeing no one, he was about to shut the door when a few low mooing sounds reached his ears.

He grabbed an umbrella and headed over.

That’s when he spotted Matthew.

Completely soaked, Matthew was squatting beside the pen, staring Chonk down while Chonk stared right back at him.

Zachary’s heart immediately ached. Why didn’t you keep knocking? You could’ve at least called out.

Matthew tipped his head back with a smile before getting to his feet and taking the umbrella from him. Let’s get inside first.

The rain showed no sign of letting up.

Zachary hurried him into dry clothes, then grabbed a beast hide towel and started drying his hair.

Matthew had spent the entire night hauling his hunt back and was genuinely exhausted. Once he cleaned up, he stole two quick kisses from Zachary, collapsed onto the bed, and fell asleep almost instantly.

Morning came, but the sky remained dark and gloomy.

Zachary stewed a chicken in a clay pot, made a pot of braised meat, panfried lamb chops, stirfried dried bamboo shoots with smoked meat, and steamed a huge pot of rice.

It was supposed to be breakfast, but the spread looked more like a feast.

Jaden came out rubbing his eyes. The moment he saw all the food by the stove, he asked, Did Alpha come back?

Zachary smiled and nodded. Go wash up and brush your teeth. Breakfast’s almost ready.

Jaden grinned. Okay.

Zachary didn’t bother waking Matthew. He figured he’d leave the meals in the pot and let him eat after he woke up.

Instead, the smell of food lured Matthew out first.

Zachary turned to look at him. Why aren’t you sleeping a little longer?

Matthew rested his chin in the crook of Zachary’s shoulder. I’m hungry.”

Zachary pulled out an enormous plate and packed it tightly with rice. He even served the soup in a basin- sized bowl. Worried Matthew still wouldn’t have enough, he kept piling more dishes intront of him.

Matthew didn’t disappoint.

He ate with a healthy appetite, cleaned every last bite off his plates, then headed back into the cave to catch up on more sleep.
