Taylor spread his hands. Jaden, the string’s all tangled up here. I can’t get it undone.”

“I got it.” Jaden bent down, ready to set it on the ground, but the moment he straightened up, he suddenly picked up something off in the air.

Without showing it on his expression, he called out, “Taylor”

“What is it?” Taylor asked.

Jaden pretended to straighten his clothes and leaned in close to his ear, lowering his voice. “There’s a beast following us.”

Taylor snapped his head up. Unease flashed in his eyes, but he kept his expression steady.

“Don’t panic. Just quietly tell the others first,” Jaden said as he picked up the kite. “We’re close to the slope. There should be therians working in the fields over there. We’ll run that way.”

Tayfor gave a quick nod and walked over to the other cubs.

“There are so many branches here. They’ll snag the kite.”

“Let’s move up ahead. There’s more space there.”

“Yeah, good idea.”

The cubs, who had been laughing just moments ago, now felt the tension creep in. They followed Jaden and Taylor, taking uneasy steps forward.

Jaden caught sight of a Hyena. He had run into them before during salt exchanges.

Hyenas usually lived out on the grasslands. In thick, overgrown woods, they wouldn’t move as fast.

“Split up. Head into the forest. Climb the trees. They can’t climb!” Jaden growled.

The little black panthers scattered at once.

Taylor stayed right behind him. Both cubs pushed themselves hard, their hearts jumping into their throats.

The Hyenas surged forward, closing in fast.

Jaden was about to pull Taylor up a tree when he suddenly saw a shadow overhead. He shouted immediately, “Taylor, run! Don’t stop!”

The little black panther changed direction in an instant and kept sprinting through the forest. Using their small size, they slipped past one pursuer after another.

This was a planned ambush. Not every tribe followed the “exchange” rule of peace. Sometimes stealing and killing brought results much faster.

Soon, another tribe had found them.

Beasts might not understand the word “kidnapping,” but therians did. They had been lying in wait for nearly a month, finally finding the right moment and the right targets.

In the Black Panther Tribe, there was a sub–theran who was extremely important and very intelligent. He could make all kinds of things. But they could never get close to him, so the Hyena Tribe shifted their attention to the two cubs.

Taylor was already panting hard. He was just a cub, and that full–speed sprint was burning through his energy fast.

Jaden watched the Hyena closing in behind them and could only keep Taylor moving, staying one step ahead while buying time for the adults to arrive.

The Hyena kept chasing from behind, while the Black–winged Kite circled overhead, waiting for an opening. Caught in a two–sided attack, Jaden and Taylor were already in a dead–end situation and close to total exhaustion.

After who knew how long of running for their lives, they spotted a narrow rock crevice that could barely fit them inside. But for two half–grown black panther cubs, it was still way too tight.

Jaden did not hesitate. “Taylor, get in there now!”

Taylor was just as panicked. “You go first!”

Jaden shouted, “Hurry up!”

While they were running at full speed, the rock crevice was getting closer. Jaden deliberately slowed down, trying to draw the Hyenas‘ attention and buy Taylor time to escape.

But before Taylor could even squeeze into the crack, his fur suddenly bristled all over. Like a panicked young bull, he lunged hard at the back of Jaden.

“Get off!” Taylor roared in rage, tearing into the Black–winged Kite that had tried to ambush Jaden. His sharp front claws sank deep into its belly.

The Black–winged Kite let out a painful screech and flapped wildly, scrambling to lift itself back into the

air.

Jaden seized the chance and shoved Taylor right up against the rock crevice, forcing him inside. “Get in. Do not come out!”

Taylor wanted to rush back out, but he knew he had to listen to Jaden and not make things worse. All he could do was shout nonstop. “Jaden! Run! Just run!”

His voice started to break without him noticing, and his bright eyes were already filling with tears.

The two Hyenas circled in front of the crevice, trying to hook Taylor out with their claws. When that did not work, they shifted back into human form and began considering another way.

Taylor forced himself deeper into the crevice and slowly climbed upward along the rock wall.

The escaping cubs ran wildly back toward the tribe, crying and shouting for other therians as they went.

Down the slope, a therian who was draining water from the field looked up at the noise. “What is going on? What happened?”

The cubs were too panicked to make sense. “Hyenas are chasing us!”

“Taylor and Jaden, they are… you have to go!”

“We will take you there!”

The therian immediately shifted into a black panther and turned to the others, shouting, “Go get help!”

The rain would wash away the beast scent, and once the patrolling therians sensed something was wrong, they rushed over as well. Angry roars quickly echoed through the entire forest.

Sharp claws pierced through Jaden’s fur and sank deep into his flesh. Pain suddenly exploded from his shoulder.

He struggled wildly, clawing and biting at the Black–winged Kite’s leg with everything he had.

The Black–winged Kite’s body swayed, then steadied itself again. Unable to endure the pain any longer, it suddenly loosened its grip.
