Chapter 320 He’s Awake

“Matthew usually did not let anyone touch him, but with that cub, he let him cuddle up and even held him. He even let the cub touch his head. When the cub could no longer walk, Matthew carried him on his back.
“The cub did not like meat, so he climbed trees to pick fruit and find all kinds of eggs for himself. I wanted to take a couple of bites, but he would not ever let me have it. If that cub had not gotten sick and his tribe had not shown up, I would have taken him back and raised him ourselves.
“When the cub left, Matthew’s eyes were red. When did he ever cry? Even when he fell out of a tree, he did not make a sound.”
Sean poured the prepared medicinal herbs onto a leaf. Lanny lifted the cub. Then the two of them carefully applied medicine to his shoulder and fed him a little warm water.
Then, Lanny cooked the soup, and Sean sat nearby tending the fire. He turned the wood in his hand and sighed. “Never thought I would pick up another cub today.”
Lanny glanced at the cub. “Good thing it was you who found him.”
Sean let out a breath. “But he is basically stuck here too.”
Lanny said, “If he cannot get out, then he cannot get out. He is still so young. As long as he is alive, that is enough.”
The sky slowly darkened. Light was already scarce at the bottom of the sinkhole, and now there was none at all.
Sean lit a fire at the cave entrance, then he and Lanny fed the unconscious cub a bowl of soup.
There was only one bed in the cave. Sean brought over some dry grass and spread it on the ground, then laid down a few smooth, large leaves. When he lay there, it actually felt pretty cool.
Lanny slept next to the cub. He kept touching his forehead from time to time. During the night, he got up several times to wash the cub with cool water.
Sean also could not fall asleep. He stood by the bed helping pour water and pass thing! over. When his eyes fell on the cub’s face, he asked in confusion, “Why do I keep feeling like this cub looks familiar?”
Lanny said softly, “Maybe you are just thinking about Matthew.”
Sean nodded in agreement. “Yeah. Every time I see this cub, I think of Matthew. When we had our accident, Matthew was already eighteen or nineteen. But in my mind, he is still just a cub. All I can think of is him following behind me, calling me Alpha. Skinny arms and legs, still trying to pick fights with me. He could not win, so he would sit at the doorway sharpening his claws, so pissed off…”
As soon as Matthew’s childhood came up, both Sean and Lanny could not help but smile. Those little memories, scattered and warm, became the place where their year after year of longing settled in this lonely sinkhole.
By then, it was deep into the night. Lanny rubbed his temples and gave a muffled cough.

Chapter 328 He’s Awake

Back then, Lanny had been fully intent on dying. The river water was freezing. He thought Sean could not live without him, so he jumped in to go with him. He did not expect the Beast God to show mercy and let them meet again.
Lanny had been unconscious for several days, Sean stayed by the bed the entire time without leaving a step. He was so anxious that he crouched on the door and cried his eyes out.
After getting Lanny back, Sean guarded him even more tightly.
Sean immediately pushed him back down onto the bed. “Just sleep: I am watching.”
Lanny checked the cub’s forehead with his palm. Once he felt the fever had gone down a bit, he finally relaxed slightly.
At dawn, when the sky was still barely light, Sean left the house. When he came back, he was holding a medicinal herb. In the past, whenever they got injured during hunts, they would eat this plant.
Lanny was cooking fish soup. There was no salt here, but there was a kind of tree leaf that tasted salty when chewed. He threw it into the pot. Then he added some sour fruit to improve the flavor.
Sean brought a smaller stone pot and boiled the medicinal herb with water. After that, he walked to the bedside to check on the cub.
Jaden slowly opened his eyes, his vision still unfocused. In his haze, he thought he saw Matthew.
He opened his mouth, trying to speak, but a sudden voice made him flinch.
Sean called out excitedly, “Lanny, the cub’s awake!”
Jaden finally got a clear look at the therian in front of him.
Not Alpha, but like one.
Sean had deep–set eyes and sharp features. He stood tall and straight, with light wheat–toned skin and a
strong, mature presence.
Jaden stared warily at the tall therian in front of him. He tried to sit up, but his body felt completely weak.
Soon, another therian came into view. He had a cool, fair skin tone, a lean build, refined features, and a gentle expression. Fine lines sat lightly at the corners of his eyes, giving him a soft, warm kind of beauty
Both therians in front of him had golden eyes. One shade was deeper, the other lighter.
Jaden studied them in silence. A strange feeling rose in his chest, something he could not quite explain.
Lanny helped Jaden sit up and said softly, “You were swept here by the river. We found you and brought you back.”

Sean stared at Jaden’s eyes, a nagging thought forming in his mind.
How is this so coincidental just like the cub we picked up last time. Same blue eyes.
He asked, “What’s your name”

Jaden tried to speak, but his throat hurt badly, and no sound came out. After several attempts, he started to panic.
“Can’t you talk?” Sean hadn’t expected that the first time he picked up a clueless cub, and now he had ended up with a mute one.
Jaden shook his head, then quickly nodded. In the end, only faint, raspy sounds slipped out. His usually fair face turned red with frustration.
