Sean pressed his slightly rough palm against Jaden’s forehead and frowned. “He’s still running a fever.”

He reached out, ready to pick up the cub. “Eat something first, then take your medicine.”

Jaden held onto the beast hide and didn’t move.

Sean only then noticed the cub wasn’t wearing anything and couldn’t help teasing him. “You’re shy about being naked?”

Jaden pulled the blanket up higher and nodded.

Sean chuckled. “This cub’s got some pride. Just like our cub. He didn’t like running around naked when he was little, either.”

Lanny found a piece of his own clothing made from thin snorting beast hide. After dressing the cub in it, it fell to just above his knees.

Sean scooped a bowl of fish soup for Jaden. “Drink it.”

Jaden lowered his head and took a sip. After getting used to Zachary’s cooking, his taste buds hadn’t yet adjusted to this more “natural” flavor. The soup rolled around in his mouth a few times before he swallowed it.

But he wasn’t picky. He could drink it before, so that he could drink it now. He downed the medicinal soup in one go.

Lanny watched the cub’s calm expression and couldn’t help asking. “Doesn’t it taste bitter?”

Jaden shook his head. He actually wanted to say it was much better than the medicine Bruce used to brew.

Sean went out hunting, leaving only Lanny and Jaden in the cave.

Lanny picked up a beast hide bag and took Jaden’s hand, slowly walking through the trees toward the west- side of the cave.

It was a tall peach tree, its branches heavy with yellow–pink fruit. The ones at the very top looked the biggest, pinkest, and juiciest.

Lanny could only climb to the middle section because it had already been harvested many times, so there weren’t many fruits left. Still, he managed to pick up about half a small bag.

Jaden had originally been waiting by the tree. When he saw Lanny coming down, he tilted his face up and pointed toward the tree.

Lanny gave a faint smile. “It’s too high up. I can’t reach it.”

Hearing that, Jaden dumped the fruits from the beast hide bag first. Then he slipped behind the tree, took off his clothes, and shifted into a small black panther. In just a few quick moves, he climbed all the way to the top.

The little black panther hung the beast hide bag on a branch, pressed his front paws against the limb, and bit off the fruits one by one before dropping them into the bag.

Lanny looked up at Jaden. His pupils widened slightly

Jaden climbed down with the beast hide bag in his mouth. The moment he landed, he met Lanny’s trembling pale gold eyes. He tilted his head, confused by why Lanny was staring at him like that.

Lanny forced his tone to stay calm. “Are you from the Black Panther Tribe?”

Jaden nodded.

Is that strange? My beast form is a black panther.

Lanny thought, Black Panther Tribe in the Beastworld isn’t just one. Besides, this cub’s eyes are blue.

But his voice was still slightly hoarse. “Do you… know Matthew?”

Jaden froze for a moment, then nodded. Confusion flickered through his ice–blue eyes.

The fruit slipped from Lanny’s hand. He dropped to a crouch so quickly that his knee hit the ground. His usually calm expression now showed clear signs of agitation.

“You know Matthew…” his throat tightened. “Is he doing okay?”

Lanny’s voice softened. “Your eyes are very beautiful. Like the sky after rain.”

Jaden opened his mouth, but still couldn’t make a sound. He ran behind the tree with his clothes in his mouth, shifted back into human form, and quickly got dressed.

“Let’s head back to the cave.” Lanny put the fruits into the beast hide bag and freed one hand. Just like when they came, he took Jaden’s hand and walked slowly through the thick trees.

Jaden kept glancing up at Lanny from time to time. At one point, he suddenly realized that when Matthew occasionally smiled, he looked a lot like Lanny.
