Chapter 66 Delicious Carbs
The potato was honestly too hot to hold.
But it had been so long since Zachary last ate any form of carbs. Just looking at it made his mouth water. Lowering his head and blowing on the potato, he determinedly peeled the skin away.
Matthew, sitting nearby, casually reached over and took the potato from Zachary. He finished/peeling it in just a few quick moves. Wrapping the potato in a fresh leaf, he placed it back in Zachary’s hands.
What an attentive man…
Stunned, Zachary froze for a moment before flashing a smile at Matthew. “Thanks!”
He took a bite, the golden flesh of the potato still steaming in his hands. It practically melted in his mouth- soft, fluffy, and with a clean, earthy sweetness.
He never thought potatoes could taste so good!
The others were surprised to see how much he enjoyed it.
Members of the Black Panther Tribe generally preferred meat as their primary food source. After all, they had evolved from carnivorous beasts. It was only natural for their diet to reflect their origins.
Not to mention, meat restored their energy quickly–and kept hunger at bay for longer.
Plant–based food such as yellow sweet potatoes, wild fruits, and wild greens was only eaten occasionally, or during the cold season when other food was not readily available.
That was why these yellow sweet potatoes weren’t particularly appealing to them. Besides, their flavor was very mild–almost bland.
Zachary’s fondness for such food far exceeded Matthew’s expectations.
Watching the pure satisfaction that bloomed on Zachary’s face with every bite, Matthew felt a flicker of confusion growing in him. The words sprang out of his mouth before he could stop himself. “Is it really that good?”
“Mm! It’s delicious!” Zachary replied, his voice slightly muffled from his cheeks stuffed full of potato.
It was soft, fluffy, rich, and fragrant… How could it not be good?
And more importantly, it was carbs!
Diego took a skeptical bite of the yellow sweet potato in his hand. “But it really doesn’t taste like much.”
Zachary raised an eyebrow. “There are other ways to cook it. I’ll teach you once we get back. It’s really good.”
When the words “really good” came from his mouth, they carried serious credibility.
The others, especially those who were closer to Matthew, immediately leaned forward and listened attentively.

Chapter 66 Delicious Carbs
Their eyes gleamed radiantly as they eagerly stared at Zachary.
Amused by their reaction, Zachary couldn’t help chuckling slightly. These therians might be tall and imposing, but they were actually quite fascinating.
They practically lost their self–control whenever they heard there was good food.
But that made sense, in a way. Food was everything, especially in such a primitive environment.
They suddenly became more energetic in their work now that they had something to be excited about.
Zachary shared some of the chili powder he’d brought with him. The potatoes became extra tasty wher dipped in the chili powder.
After wolfing down four large potatoes and several skewers of roasted mushrooms, he was completely stuffed. He sat on the ground, rubbing his rounded belly with a satisfied expression.
Matthew, however, was puzzled.
In the past, Zachary had always loved eating meat. He would even get upset if a meal didn’t include any meat. But ever since he fell into the water, he began to favor wild greens and fruit instead. Even meat had to be meticulously marinated, grilled, or fried before he’d eat more of it.
The small flame of suspicion in Matthew quietly ignited again.
Could a person really change that much?
Suspicion aside, he was worried.
The sight of Zachary’s slender frame agonized him greatly.
Zachary always ate so little. Moreover, he constantly mixed his meals with wild greens and fruit. How could he gain any weight?
Concern gnawed away at Matthew.
Zachary, on the other hand, was utterly satisfied with his meal as an “omnivore.” Not only was he energized, but his mood had also improved.
As
Pected, carbs were essential for one’s well–being.
Once dinner was over, some of the therians used vines to fasten the beast–hide bags securely around themselves. They planned to transport the gathered supplies back to the tribe and return after a brief rest.
It was Matthew’s turn to take the first patrol tonight. Handing his clothes to Zachary, he instructed his mate to huddle with Elias and Quincy for warmth if it was too cold.
Zachary wasn’t particularly sleepy yet. Besides, he was sitting close enough to the fire that he didn’t feel cold. He gave a perfunctory answer and remained by the fire, zoning out for some time. Occasionally, he would chat with the other sub–therians around him.
He watched as Matthew, in his beast form, silently moved through the dark forest. Each step carried the presence and pressure of a wild predator. Once again, he couldn’t help feeling awed by the strange wonders of this world.

Chapter 66 Delicious Carbs
After completing the first round of patrol, Matthew climbed a tall tree with incredible agility. It only took him a few swift moves to reach a fork in the trunk, where he settled down to keep a vigilant watch on the surroundings.
His eyes gazed directly at Zachary in the darkness.
Zachary waved at him.
The black panther gave a small nod in return.
A long while passed before Zachary finally grew sleepy. Yawning, he prepared a simple “bed” by the fire and lay down wrapped in Matthew’s clothes.
But the ground beneath him was hard. It dug into his body, no matter how much he shifted around to find a comfortable position.
He couldn’t help stealing a glance at Matthew, suddenly yearning for his warm body and soft fur.
In the latter half of the night, Kyle finally switched shifts with Matthew. Matthew quickly returned to Zachary’s side and found a suitable spot to lie down. Then, he gently nudged Zachary with his paw until he was tucked tightly against his belly.
Zachary, in his half–asleep state, spotted the large black shape beside him. Knowing Matthew was back, he snuggled closer out of habit.
Matthew reached out his paw and adjusted his clothes so that they covered Zachary properly.
Acting purely by instinct, Zachary rubbed his face against Matthew’s belly and wrapped his arms around the large, heavy paw.
