Chapter 67 Sweet Potato Patch
Flicking his tail, Matthew let out a low rumbling purr.
It didn’t take long before Zachary drifted back to sleep. Though he started out lying on his side, he gradually shifted until he was sprawled completely across Matthew’s belly.
His sleeping behavior was seriously terrible.
Luke settled beside Wesley, signaling for him to huddle closer for warmth.
“No need.” Wesley glanced over, then turned away in disdain.
The small stone in his hand cracked audibly under his crushing grip.
When Harper followed Wesley’s gaze, he immediately understood what was bothering his son. He reached forward and gave Wesley a sharp tug, warning him not to act impulsively.
The truth was that he had originally planned for Wesley to become mates with Matthew. After all, Matthew’s strength and bravery were acknowledged throughout the Black Panther Tribe.
Even the chief had expressed his intention for Matthew to inherit the position in the future during his discussion with Harper.
That was why Matthew had been the most dependable choice.
But unfortunately, Matthew had set his heart on Zachary after just one glance. No amount of persuasion from Harper could change his decision.
From that moment onward, Wesley–who had never been especially close to Zachary in the first place- grew even more resentful. His expression would turn vicious every time he spotted Zachary
Fortunately, Zachary was soft–hearted. Harper only had to cry and plead a little, and Zachary would obediently bring over food, beast–hides, medicine, and other necessities for them.
Harper sighed heavily at the thought.
They had been counting on Zachary’s support as usual, especially with the cold season fast approaching. Everything had been fine before… so why had Zachary suddenly changed?
Some of the therians began making preparations at the crack of dawn, though the sky was still dim and hazy.
Matthew didn’t move a muscle, not even after waking up. That was because Zachary was sleeping soundly on his belly. Retracting his claws, he gently stroked Zachary’s hair with his paw pads.
Yael happened to spot the scene. Even in his black panther form, the teasing smile on his face was obvious.
Matthew shot Yael an irritated look and flicked his tail in warning, signaling him to keep quiet.
Now wasn’t the time to relax and sleep late. They were meant to be out gathering supplies, so it didn’t take long before everyone else was awake.

With no other choice, Matthew gently patted Zachary to rouse him.
Daniel walked over and joked, “Are you trying to wake him, or coax him back to sleep?”
Hearing the commotion, Zachary opened his eyes. He was still tired and sleepy, but everyone else was already busy with their chores–he couldn’t just continue sleeping, so he quickly sat up.
There were a few boiled eggs left in the bag. Peeling two for himself, he handed the rest to Matthew. Matthew gently pushed them back, telling him to eat them himself.
“You’ve been working hard lately. I’ll make you something delicious when we get back home.” Zachary shook his head and stuffed them directly into Matthew’s mouth, smiling.
Matthew curled his lips lightly in agreement.
There were several experienced sub–therians among the three groups. They guided their respective groups deeper into the mountain to search for more edible resources.
Garrett took the lead. Since he came out gathering every year, he was the first to find the place where sweet potatoes grew abundantly, just by relying on his memory alone.
It was a damp slope, south of the river valley. Dense patches of sweet potato vines and tangled leaves covered the ground as far as the eye could see.
Zachary was even more excited than yesterday, constantly marveling inwardly. Who said primitive people lacked knowledge? They were clearly very smart!
They even knew potatoes and sweet potatoes were edible!
It might have been the soil, but the sweet potatoes here had grown especially massive. With thin red skin and smooth shapes, they were very beautiful.
Zachary recalled following his grandparents into the fields to dig sweet potatoes as a child, and roasting them with his friends by the edge of the field on weekends.
Since fragrant roasted sweet potatoes tasted far better than ordinary roasted potatoes, the others were more motivated than usual to dig today.
They repeated the process from before. While the therians did the digging, Zachary and the other sub- therians did the collecting behind them. It might not seem like particularly hard work, but it was unexpectedly exhausting to constantly bend over, too.
Wesley’s group, after finding a patch of sweet potatoes that had already been harvested, came over to help.
Zachary immediately feigned ignorance when he spotted Harper and the others approaching. Instead, he quickly pulled Elias and Quincy to another harvesting spot.
Zachary’s actions infuriated Wesley. Who does he think he is? How dare he give me such attitude?
There was a damp river valley located further down. A wide river ran through the middle, with lush green grass growing thickly on both sides and oddly shaped rocks scattered throughout.
Such places might have other edible plants growing nearby, so Zachary was tempted to go and take a look

around.

Quincy grabbed Zachary by the arm. He warned, “Aren’t you afraid of snakes? Don’t go into the grass near the water. There are often snakes hiding there.”
The warning was very effective. Zachary instantly stopped in his tracks. “I’ll check somewhere else then
“Afraid of snakes?” Wesley, standing not far away, curled his lips into a cold sneer. “He certainly kept that hidden very well. I didn’t know he was afraid of snakes.”
The sweet potato wasn’t very large. With another group helping, the work went much faster
As a result, Zachary had some free time on his hands. He began searching the surrounding area, unknowingly drifting some distance away from the others as he wandered around.
Whenever Matthew straightened up from work, he would instinctively search for Zachary. However/he suddenly couldn’t find Zachary anywhere.
“Where’s Zachary?”
“He went to check if there’s anything else edible nearby,” Quincy replied.
Feeling uneasy, Matthew decided to look for Zachary.
“Donald and Henry are patrolling the area.” Elías rolled his eyes, thinking Matthew was worrying too much.
Meanwhile, Zachary was digging enthusiastically. Crouched low to the ground, he scraped away at the soil around him with great effort.
