Chapter 69 It Will Help You Recover

“This?” Ryker asked, thinking it was what Zachary wanted. He passed over the snake he had just caught and added, “Here. If you feel like eating it, Matthew can roast it for you tonight.”

Zachary jerked back so sharply that his neck recoiled in alarm.

To calm him, Matthew gave the back of his head a light, reassuring rub before examining the snake in Ryker’s grip. After a brief look, his expression relaxed, and he let out a quiet breath.

“It’s not a highly dangerous snake. There’s no need to panic.”

Zachary blinked in disbelief. “So I won’t die?”

Only then did Ryker notice Matthew had been holding onto his wrist. “Did it bite you?”

Matthew gave a small nod. “Where did you find it?”

Ryker pointed in the direction where Zachary had been pulling garlic from the ground. “Over there.”

Zachary murmured, “That might be the one that got me.”

“Then I suppose I’ve gotten even for you,” Ryker said with a grin. “Don’t worry–it’s only mildly toxic. I’ll crush some herbs later and apply them to your wound. You’ll recover just fine.”

Aside from the soreness and a bit of dizziness and queasiness, there didn’t seem to be any serious effects.

The weight in his chest finally eased. Zachary no longer looked as weak. He tapped Matthew’s arm. “Let me down. I can walk.”

Matthew ignored him and continued carrying him all the way to the tree near the sweet potato field, only setting him down there to rest.

Seeing Zachary being carried back, Quincy and Elias rushed over, worried that something serious had happened. “What’s going on?”

“He got bitten by a snake,” Matthew explained after settling Zachary. Then he turned to Quincy and Elias. “Can you watch over him? I’ll go get some water.”

Quincy nodded. “Alright, go ahead.”

Elias crouched down in front of Zachary, concern written all over his face. “Where did it bite you? What kind of snake was it? Is it serious?”

“I’m okay. I’ll be fine soon.” Remembering how frightened he had been earlier, Zachary felt a little embarrassed, and now that he knew he was safe, he even tried to reassure Elias.

Quincy inspected the injury. “Did this happen near the river?”

Zachary shook his head, then suddenly remembered the garlic he had left behind. “Oh, right—I found something else good earlier.”

“Enough. You’re injured, so just rest,” Quincy said, gently brushing his hair aside. “We’ll go dig it up later.”

When Matthew came back, he was carrying two large bundles of leaves filled with water. “Are you still feeling nauseous?”

Zachary shook his head, then hesitated and nodded.

Matthew knelt and held the water to his lips. “Drink it all.”

Zachary stared at him. “All of it?”

“Yes.”

With no alternative, Zachary drank quickly.

Ryker came back with some herbs. After grinding them into a paste with a stone, he had Matthew apply to Zachary’s wound.

Then he held out the snake again. “Do you want to eat this tonight? It’ll help you recover.”

Zachary shook his head vigorously.

Matthew gently pushed the snake back. “He doesn’t want snake meat.”

“That’s a pity,” Ryker said with a dismissive wave. “I’ll go back to work.”

A short distance away, Wesley brushed the dirt from his hands and walked over. As he passed Zachary, he glanced at him out of the corner of his eye and asked in a lazy tone, “What are you doing now? Are you already taking a break?”

Zachary sat under the tree, holding his arm as Matthew insisted he rest. He looked up and replied, “I feel like it.”

Wesley deliberately eyed him. “What’s wrong with your arm?”

Zachary ignored him.

“Did something bite you?” Wesley crouched down to get a closer look, his smile cold and without warmth. “There are plenty of poisonous insects and dangerous beasts around here, so you’d better be careful–you wouldn’t want to damage your arm and end up becoming Matthew’s burden.”

“Well, you sound very concerned,” Zachary replied coolly, then casually picked up some fruit beside him and ate it. “Are you trying to compete for leadership or something?”

The fruits–likely picked by Matthew–were surprisingly sweet. The colorful berries, gathered by Quincy and the others during their break, were also quite tasty.

Wesley didn’t understand what he meant.

“You have no right to order me around,” Zachary added.

Wesley’s expression darkened. “Don’t be ungrateful.”

“What did I even do?” Zachary asked innocently. “If you’ve got so much energy, go dig up more sweet potatoes.

“Stop bothering me.”

Wesley snapped. “Why didn’t that snake just kill you?”

“How do you know it was a snake?” Zachary suddenly looked up, his tone turning cold. “I never told you that.”

“So what if I do?” Wesley shot back.

Zachary dropped his relaxed demeanor and said slowly and clearly, “Wesley, I don’t care what issues we had before.

“But from now on, you’d better watch yourself. I don’t let grudges go.”

“Are you trying to scare me?”

“Try me.”

Wesley glared at him fiercely, then turned and walked away.

With the herbal treatment on his wrist, Zachary’s fear had mostly disappeared, and the dizziness had lessened significantly,

After standing up to Wesley, he felt even better.

Since everyone else was busy working, Zachary felt a bit awkward just sitting there. But the moment he tried to get up, Matthew gave him a sharp look that made him stop immediately.

Alright, fine.

Zachary raised his hand in surrender and even flashed a small smile at him.

Still thinking about the garlic he had left behind, his eyes kept drifting back in that direction.

However, going there alone still made him uneasy.

So he stayed put, obediently sitting under the tree while eating fruit to pass the time.
