Chapter 70 The Appeal of Good Food
Finished
The fruit tasted exceptionally good, especially the grapes, which were deep purple and bursting with sweetness. The persimmons were perfectly ripened as well–soft, golden, and almost creamy as they dissolved on the tongue.
By the time the sun dipped toward the horizon and the last sweet potatoes on the hillside had been unearthed, Zachary finally called Matthew over to join him.
After learning that new food had been discovered, the other therians and sub–therians abandoned their rest and hurried to follow, continuing the search around the area where Zachary had found the garlic.
“Over there,” Zachary said, instructing Matthew to bundle the dug–up garlic shoots using vines.
Yael raised a brow at Matthew and teased, “Since when did you become so compliant?
“You don’t even seem like a therian anymore.”
Before he could say more, Quincy called out from ahead, “Yael, come give me a hand.”
Matthew stepped in front of him, glancing sideways. “Then don’t go.“.
“Get out of the way,” Yael replied. The moment he spoke, he dashed toward Quincy, instantly switching to enthusiastic obedience. “Alright, I’m coming!”
Before long, the cleared area was once again filled with beast–hide bags, all stuffed to capacity.
That evening’s meal consisted of quacking beasts caught from the river by the therians.
Zachary had discovered several wild seasonings nearby–perilla, mint, fennel, and litsea–all growing abundantly throughout the valley.
After Garrett learned these plants could enhance the flavor of meat, he mentioned that similar herbs grew in large quantities near the river by their tribe. They had always overlooked them as mere weeds and never considered using them as food.
Zachary originally intended to gather more to take back, but since the tribe already had some, he only picked small amounts of each.
Once the quacking beasts were cleaned, Zachary crushed the herbs with a stone and thoroughly rubbed them into the quacking beasts, inside and out. He then added salt, wrapped them in leaves, coated them with mud, and placed them directly into the fire to roast.
The other sub–therians followed his example, preparing many more quacking beasts in the same way and burying them in the flames.
Meanwhile, the therians set off to collect firewood, wanting the fire to burn hotter so the food would cook faster.
When Zachary decided the meat was ready, he carefully pulled one mud–covered bundle from the fire and
cracked the hardened shell with a stone.
A cloud of hot steam burst out, carrying a rich aroma of spices mixed with roasted meat that quickly filled

the cool air.
Everyone nearby leaned in, their focus entirely fixed on the dish in Zachary’s hands.
As the browned leaves were peeled away, the fragrance intensified even more.
The quacking beast had been roasted to perfection, its surface glistening with oil. A light press with a branch caused the meat to separate effortlessly from the bone, juices flowing freely.
Every fiber had absorbed the seasoning completely.
It was tender, juicy, and falling apart with ease.
The smell alone made everyone swallow instinctively.
“Zachary, is it ready to eat?” the therians asked impatiently.
He nodded. “It’s done.”
The moment he spoke, several hands reached toward the fire at once.
Zachary’s heart skipped, worried they might get burned.
Elias waved them off calmly. “Relax, they know what they’re doing.”
As a gesture of appreciation for Matthew’s help, Zachary personally handed him the first roasted quacking beast, offering it with a warm smile. “Eat it while it’s still hot.”
Matthew accepted without hesitation. He enjoyed this kind of special attention from Zachary and clearly welcomed it.
With so many people present, being the first to receive a portion–even ahead of Quincy and Elias–meant something to him.
“D*mn, this is incredible! It’s seriously amazing!” Yael exclaimed after handing off the legs to Quincy and taking a big bite himself.
Daniel and Kyle didn’t even bother waiting for it to cool. They devoured one quacking beast in just a few bites before immediately reaching for more.
“This is so good.”
“How can it taste this good?”
Praises echoed all around as the group ate eagerly, oil shining at the corners of their mouths, unwilling to leave even the bones behind.
At that moment, Zachary had clearly earned a revered status among them.
Ethan wiped the grease from his fingers and suggested, “How about we catch more?”
“Good idea–let’s all go together!”
With one suggestion, everyone agreed.

The therians turned their attention tower quacking beasts usually return to the nald with expectant looks.
Even the composed Donald gave in to the appeal of good food. He cleared his throat and said, “Well…
“Got it!”
nests
Sear the shore at night.”
Not only their group, but many therians from the other teams also got up and headed out to hunt more quacking beasts.
Now that Zachary had shown them how to prepare the dish, he leaned against a tree after eating, relaxing with some fruit nearby. The scene looked more like a leisurely picnic than a survival trip.
Those who had returned to the tribe the previous night to deliver supplies came back just in time to enjoy another round of roasted quacking beast.
Though exhausted at first, they quickly revived after tasting the food, wishing they had returned sooner.
After dinner, more therians continued transporting supplies back to the tribe. Before leaving, they reminded their companions to save some of Zachary’s future cooking for them.
That night, Matthew was finally able to rest peacefully.
He sat beside Zachary and gently took his injured wrist, inspecting it closely–the snakebite marks had already begun to fade.
Zachary had eaten well earlier, so his condition seemed stable and untroubled.
