Chapter 76 The Moment Everything Escalated.

A dangerous stillness settled over Matthew’s face. The temperature around him seemed to plummet, and when he finally spoke, his voice carried a heavy chill. “You want that?”
Zachary immediately denied it, shaking his head frantically.
Whether Matthew would ever agree was one thing, Zachary himself could never accept something like that,
“Don’t let him pressure you,” Hubert urged. “Think about it carefully. Wouldn’t this arrangement work?”
He was already picturing it as though the matter had nearly been decided. “We can make it work. We’ll ret along.”
Matthew stepped forward.
Then another step.
The closer he came, the more oppressive his presence became. When he finally answered, each word dropped like a stone. “He already refused.”
Hubert looked at him with open contempt. “Why should I care what you

came out strained.
He had always been the sort to avoid conflict, the type who could usually talk things through with other people. Never in his life had he stood this close to two men trying to beat each other senseless.
Every dull impact of flesh against flesh made his nerves jump.
Fear crawled up his spine. He wanted to break them apart, yet he could not find a way in. Worse, he was terrified one of them might hit him by accident.
Coped to those two, he was far too small.
If either of them landed a punch on him, he would probably be sprawled on the ground and unable to get up for hours.
“Matthew! Hubert! Stop it! Both of you, stop!”
The scene unfolding in front of him was so absurd that his mind nearly emptied.
Since crossing into this
world, he had never once seen Matthew lose his temper like this.
Still, the reason was obvious enough.
Another therian had stood right in front of him and openly tried to take his mate. No matter who it was,

that was not the kind of thing a therian could ignore.
The trouble was that the other party was a tiger.

Zachary did not know much about fighting beasts, though he knew enough to understand the problem. In human form. Matthew and Hubert looked evenly matched. If they truly lost control and shifted, however, the black panther would almost certainly be at a disadvantage.
Running out of options, Zachary gritted his teeth and threw himself between them.
He moved too quickly, or maybe just badly.
Something caught at his foot, and his balance vanished at once. He lurched forward and crashed to the ground with a heavy thump.
Silence fell.
The clearing, which had been on the verge of exploding, went still in an instant.
Matthew’s hand remained locked

Both men froze mid–motion and looked down.
Zachary had no idea what Hubert felt at that moment. Matthew, on the other hand, was easy to read. He had truly been ready to beat Hubert to death.
“Are you hurt?”
“What happened? Where does it hurt?”
Still curled on the ground, Zachary caught the opportunity at once.
Instead of getting up, he stayed where he was, clutching one leg and hissing as though the pain were unbearable.
“My leg… It hurts.” He added another groan, this time even weaker. “I think I hurt my waist, too. It really hurts…”
Both Matthew and Hubert dropped the fight and rushed toward him.
Matthew was faster. He shoved Hubert away without ceremony and crouched beside Zachary, reaching for his leg. “Let me check.”
To keep them from starting up again, Zachary had no choice but to keep up the act. The second Matthew’s hand touched him, he sucked in a sharp breath and cried out as though the pain had flared instantly.

Now that Zachary appeared injured, fighting Hubert no longer mattered. Matthew bent down, scooped him up from the ground, and prepared to leave without another glance.
Hubert took a step as if to follow.

A voice cut across the clearing from behind him. “So this is where you ran off to, huh?”
Horace had been out hunting wolves when he caught the strong scent of another therian nearby. Worried that Hubert had wandered into trouble, he tracked him down in a hurry.
The moment he saw his younger brother standing there safe and sound, he let out a breath. Then he walked over and smacked the back of Hubert’s head. “Are you asking for a beating?”
“Horace, I…” Hubert lowered his head, dejection practically radiating from him..
Horace narrowed his eyes. “What now?”
“I met a sub–therian,” Hubert muttered. “I like him.”
Horace looked around the clearing. “Where is he?”
Hubert looked as though his heart had been torn out. “His mate took him
away.”
Horace went quiet.
After a pause, Hubert added, “They’re from the Black Panther Tribe. That therian’s name seems to be Matthew.”
“Matthew?” Horace knew enough about the nearby tribes to react immediately. “Drop it.”

Hubert lifted his head, his defiance evident. “Why? You think I can’t beat him?”
Horace could not even be bothered to answer that directly. “Does the sub–therian like you?”
Hubert fell silent.
“Come on.” Horace caught him by the back of the neck and started dragging him away. “You already ruined my hunt. Wait until Alpha hears about this.”
“Horace, please don’t tell Alpha,” Hubert pleaded.
By then, Yael and the others had also arrived.
They had picked up an unfamiliar scent and hurried over to investigate. The second they saw Zachary in Matthew’s arms, concern appeared on

Ethan’s expression sharpened. “A therian? Did he do something to Zachary?”
“No,” Zachary answered so quickly that it almost sounded suspicious. “A wolf attacked me. That therian saved me.

Kyle looked confused. “Then why are you injured?”
Zachary rubbed the tip of his nose, feeling a stab of guilt. “I tripped and fell.”
Daniel glanced around. “Where is he? We should thank him. We caught a few snorting beasts.”
At that, the air around Matthew seemed to cool
other degree.
Zachary immediately decided there was no need to mention Hubert any further. “He already left.” Once they returned to camp, Matthew reached over and started pulling up Zachary’s clothes. Zachary nearly jumped. He slapped a hand down to stop him at once. “What are you doing?” Matthew looked at him steadily. “You said your waist hurts.
Zachary paused.
Then he straightened up and forced surprise onto his face. “It… seems better now.”
Finisher
Matthew’s gaze became sharper. Without commenting, he reached for Zachary’s leg next. “What about this, then?”
“My leg is fine too.” Zachary quickly moved his ankle to prove it. “See? I’m completely alright.”
Matthew said nothing. He only stared at him for a moment, then got up and walked away to a different spot.
Under Zachary’s uneasy gaze, he sat down alone, deliberately choosing a place far from him.
