Zachary sighed, feeling helpless. He gave them a full account of the day’s events, then looked at them as though asking them to save him.

The more he spoke, the more convinced he sounded. “He’s from the White Tiger Tribe, so he should be strong. If he looks good too, then that’s even better. When the time comes, the two of them can divide the work. One can hunt, one can stay back and handle things at home, and someone can always stay by your side. That sounds great. Matthew wouldn’t have to shoulder everything alone anymore.”

To Elias, this plan solved every problem. Zachary would gain another mate who was strong and handsome. Meanwhile, Hubert would get his wish, and Matthew would have someone to share the burden.

If Matthew had heard even half of that speech, he probably would have sharpened his knife on the spot.

Zachary sat there, dumbfounded for several seconds. Then he slowly turned toward Quincy. “That kind of thing… actually exists?”

Earlier, when Hubert had said Zachary could take two mates, Zachary had assumed he was talking nonsense. He had never imagined it was a real custom in this world.

Elias leaned closer, still far too interested in the idea. “Why not think about it properly? I can help you ask around and find the White Tiger Tribe.”

His next sentence came out with ridiculous sincerity. “Then we can bring Hubert back.”

“No, absolutely not.” Zachary waved both hands so hard he nearly looked panicked. The whole thing sounded more outrageous the longer Elias talked.

His current arrangement with Matthew was already stable enough. There was no way he would blow that up himself.

Elias looked confused. “Why not? Isn’t that a good solution?”

The suggestion sounded silly yet also strangely workable.
