Chapter 90 Modernstyle Meal

Finished

The black panther licked his paw with elegant satisfaction, then dragged his kill down to the river to clean it.

When food was plentiful, therians usually didn’t eat organ meat. They all thought it had too strong a smell.

But when they’d been picking peppercorns, Zachary had mentioned it offhand, so this time Matthew kept the heart, liver, and lungs.

Jaden woke not long after Matthew left, but he was too attached to the warmth of Zachary’s arms to move right away. He just lay there on his back, staring up at Zachary’s sleeping face for a while longer, shamelessly lingering.

Ever since the weather turned colder, Matthew and Jaden had made a habit of boiling a pot of hot water first thing after getting upsome for drinking, some saved for Zachary to wash up with.

Once the water came to a boil and Zachary still hadn’t woken up, Jaden headed out to gather some firewood nearby and sharpen his claws while he was at it.

Now that he was finally home and didn’t have to think about working the next day, Zachary slept until he woke naturally. Only then did he stretch, shuffle into his homemade fur slippers, and wander outside at an unhurried pace.

The cave was empty. The

only thing left was the faint glow of dying embers by the hearth.

Then Zachary happened to glance overand froze.

The shelves in the storage alco were piled with fruit, mushrooms, and wild greens. There was also a huge

  1. c. stalks and all, stacked neatly

mound of potatoes and sweet potatoes on the floor, and bundles of garlic, against the wall.

There was even a whole basket of peppercorns. Together with the food they’d already before, it now filled up a huge section of the room.

Zachary wandered through the space once, grinning to himself. He was ridiculously happy.

Then the moment he stepped out of the cave, he was stunned all over again by the bundles of outside.

Is the tribe really this generous? Or had Matthew just gone out and robbed somebody?

At that moment, Jaden was making his way back home with a huge armful of firewood, carrying so much that it blocked his view. He could only walk slowly, wobbling a little with each step, looking dead serious about the task.

The second Zachary

saw him, he hurried over to help.

It’s okay. I can do it.Jaden didn’t let go. He walked straight into the cave and stacked each piece of wood neatly beside the hearth against the wall.

Zachary had started to suspect Jaden might be a little obsessive about order. All the sticks he brought back were almost exactly the same size, snapped to nearly the same length, and even when stacking them, he made sure cach row matched perfectly from bottom to top.

Sure enough, when the dad was hardworking, the son wasn’t going to be lazy either.

Matthew worked the same way: clean, efficient, and with no wasted motion.

As Jaden stacked the wood, he turned and said to Zachary, Sire, there’s hot water in the pot. You should wash up before it gets cold.”

That about melted Zachary on the spot. Seriouslywhat have I done to deserve such a sweet kid?

Just as Zachary was about to start cooking after washing up, Matthew came back with the kill.

He strode in carrying meat over one shoulder, with the heart, liver, and lungs hanging from his other hand.

Because Matthew’s body was so unfairly perfect, even carrying a bunch of organs somehow looked stylish on him.

Didn’t you just get food from the distribution yesterday?Zachary asked. Why’d you go hunting again?

Matthew set everything down on the stone slab. I didn’t take any meat yesterday.

Only then did Zachary realize that when he’d really hadn’t been any meat in there.

hecked the storage area earlier, aside from a few eggs, there

Waithad Matthew skipped the meat because of me? Because I’d wanted more fruit and vegetables instead? After all, therians mostly lived on meat.

Why didn’t you take

any?

“You seem to like fruit,Matthew said. Then, worried Zachary might start feeling guilty about the household food supply, he added, I can hunt.

In the span of one morning, Zachary had already been hit by one wave of emotion after another thanks to Jaden and Matthew.

Looking at the father and son, he said sincerely, It’s so nice having you two.”

Matthew answered, We’re family.

Zachary thought of the rice piled outside and asked, What’s the deal with all that rice?

The chief said to let you handle it.

Me?

Matthew nodded. You were the one who discovered it.

Then let’s call Quincy and the others over. We can hull it together and split it up afterward.”

Okay.

Looking at the storage TOOm overflowing with food, Zachary’s eyes lit up. He rubbed his hands together,

already excited.

He was going to make himself a hot, proper, modernstyle meal.

First, Zachary showed Matthew and Jaden how to remove the husks from the rice.

The two of them picked it up fast. Before long, they came back in carrying bowls of polished white rice,

Zachary rinsed it several times, then added red dates and sweet potato, put everything into a stone pot added water, and set it to cook.

Jaden sat nearby, feeding wood into the fire, while Matthew stayed just as busypicking wild scallions and peeling garlic.

Zachary sliced the snortbeast meat thin, then marinated it briefly with salt, Sichuan peppercorns, and scallionginger water.

Once the oil was hot, he threw in the garlic and chili peppers to bloom the fragrance, then added the grunt beast and stirfried it quickly before tossing in a huge handful of wild onions. Not long after, a steaming platter of fragrant stirfried grunt beast with onions was ready.

Matthew and Jaden both craned their necks toward the plate at the same time and swallowed.

Zachary tossed a few potatoes and sweet potatoes into the fire, then panseared a few pieces of moo beast tenderloin.

By the time everything was set out, the whole scene felt less like a primitive cave and more like some modern cavethemed restaurant with a prehistoric aesthetic.

For Zachary, though, the

exactly the right thick

irresistible thing on the table was the pot of congee. It had cooked down to

fragrant, and naturally sweet.

He had missed this kind of so badly he could’ve cried.

It was

first time trying it. He took one sip, and his eyes went wide at once.
