Chapter 91 Hard Work
The food in the bowl was sweet and soft.
Jaden took two more big mouthfuls in a row, then even licked the corners of his mouth clean.

Seeing how much Jaden loved it, Matthew took a sip too–and was honestly startled. He hadn’t expected something called rice to make soup this good. The texture was so soft and tender that even newborn cubs could eat it.
Zachary, meanwhile, felt downright blissful. Meat and carbs–healthy and delicious.
Matthew was especially obsessed with the stir–fried moo beast and onions. The chili made it spicy, fragrant/ and wildly appetizing, and paired with the roasted potatoes and sweet potatoes, it was unbelievably good
Matthew could eat raw meat without changing expression, but now Zachary had spoiled his palate more and more. He’d even started thinking some other foods tasted bad–and before this, he’d never really had a concept of “bad food” at all.
At the stone table, the big one and the little one both kept their heads down and ate like their food was about to run away.
After breakfast, Matthew w
went to find Kyle and the others.
The second they heard Zachary needed help with somethin
every last one of them jumped at the chance, dropping what they were doing and rushing over like they were afraid they’d be too late.
This was exactly the kind of opportunity they’d been waiting for–to score another meal.
At the moment, Zachary was sorting through the persimmons they’d gathered, planning to make dried persimmons to
ve for the cold season.
He had just finished washing them and spreading them out on the rocks others come charging over at full speed.

“Morning!”
“Zachary, we’re here to work!”
“Yeah, me too!”

They sounded so cheerful; i it was less like they’d come to help and more like they were showing up for a wedding banquet.
Zachary wiped the water from his hands and smiled at them. “You really don’t have to be that eager.”

Isaan and Linus waved it off with simple honesty. “It’s fine. We weren’t doing anything anyway.”
Donald rolled up his sleeves. “Come on. We love working.”
Kyle and the others immediately chimed in, “Yeah! We love working!”
Plotched
Zachary pulled out a handful of rice stalks, laid them on the stone slab, then picked up an oval–shaped stone and ground it back and forth until the husks came loose.
Ethan asked. “That’s all it takes?”
Zachary nodded. “The white part is what we actually eat.”
Kellan looked supremely confident. The job didn’t look hard at all. “Leave it to us.”
Zachary laughed. “Alright, then.”
Not long after, Taylor came running over and threw himself at Zachary’s leg, hugging it tight as he tilted up his little face. “I’m helping too!”
“Our Taylor is amazing.” Zachary ruffled his soft curls. “Then I’m counting on you today.”
Yael walked over and looked at his son with utter disbelief. “Zachary, if you praise him any more, to start floating.”
Taylor turned and pouted at Yael. “I’m not!”
Yael immediately put on a fake sweet voice and mimicked him, swaying as he did it. “I’m- not-”
Taylor went speechless.
He turned and went straight to Jaden for emotional support.

Quincy and Elias walked over to Zachary, both smiling and holding out their hands. “See if you like them.”
One stone was blue, the other purple, and in the sunlight, they glittered brilliantly.
Zachary couldn’t help admiring them. “They’re gorgeous.”
The two of them dropped the stones into his hands. “They’re yours.”
Zachary blinked. “For me?”
“Of course,” Elias said with a grin. “What, did you think we came over just to show off?”
“Thanks.” Zachary accepted them easily, without putting on any false modesty.
Kyle and the others had already gotten busy. Then Yael seemed to remember something and asked Zachary, “Where’s Matthew?”

Finished
Before Zachary could finish, Matthew appeared, carrying a stack of wet beast hide clothes, with white soap foam still clinging to his hair.
Kyle and the others all turned to stare at him in unison.
Now that was a devoted husband and father.
Yael laughed. “Well, look at that. Off doing the laundry, huh?”
Kyle joined in at once. “Matthew sure is hardworking.”
Matthew looked completely unbothered. Right there in front of everyone, he carried a wooden drying rack out of the cave and calmly started hanging up the freshly washed clothes one by one. The motions were practiced and efficient.
Without meaning to, Zachary pictured Matthew squatting by the stream, bent over and scrubbing laundry in all seriousness. Paired with that permanently expressionless, handsome face of his, the whole image felt bizarrely mismatched.
Then again, Zachary had seen it enough times by now that he was used to it.
Husking rice looked simple, but actually doing it wasn’t easy. The therians were strong, so they had to be careful not to use too much force or too little, and after bending over for so long, they eventually just gave up and sat cross–legged on the ground instead.
Handing this kind of careful, delicate work over to them was honestly making things hard on everyone- but the thought of Zachary’s cooking was enough to keep them grinding away through gritted teeth.
Zachary and Quincy took the two cubs down to the stream to set fish traps, then picked a huge pile of perilla leaves. After that, they headed to the riverbank, where Garrett had mentioned gathering spices.
Sure enough, there was plenty. Whole stretches of lemongrass grew in thick clusters, and in the damp ground close to the water, there was mint and fennel too.
The snails they’d collected earlier were still soaking in a basin, alive and icy stir–fried snail dish for
and by now they’d finished purging all the mud from their systems. Zachary was planning to make a spicy stir–fried snail dish for dinner.
Since everyone had skipped lunch and worked all afternoon, Zachary decided to start dinner early.
And since the therians knew how much they could eat, they each brought meat, so there was no shortage ingredients.
