She flinched

For who? Who is she? Who is more deserving than the woman who stood by you all those years when you had nothing?”

I looked down at her.

She kept going. My name over and over. Dominic. Dominic. Dominic. Crying at my feet while Sparrow watched from a car window with the expression of a man who had seen stranger things and not particularly cared about those either.

I let her say everything she needed to say. I waited. And when she had run out of words and was simply holding my leg and sobbing, I reached down and carefully removed her hands.

She grabbed for me again, but I stepped back.

I turned and walked toward my car.

She ran after me.

Just as I reached the door she caught me from behind, her arms going around me, her voice in my ear

“Please, Dominic. Whatever I have done wrong I am sorry. I will change. I love you. I will do anything Please give me one more chance. I cannot live without you. You have no idea what I have gone through just to see you. My life has been miserable. If you leave me I am going to die.”

I tried to loosen her fingers from around my body. She tightened her grip.

I tried again. She held on harder.

I pulled her hands away with the force the situation required and she went down, landing on the ground with a sharp sound of impact, wincing, tears streaming.

I got in the car and drove.

I was through the restaurant gate and onto the road when my phone rang.

Celeste.

My mood lifted so completely and so immediately that I was mildly embarrassed by it.

“Good morning,” I said when I answered.

“Good morning, Dominic.” Her voice was warm and easy, the voice she used when she was not performing for anyone. “I was just thinking about you.”

“Were you?”

“Do not sound so smug about it.”

I almost laughed. “I thought about what you said. About it being time.”

“Yes. I meant it. I am ready.”

“There is something I did not tell you,” I said. “I put two bodyguards on you. I needed to know you were

safe.”

She paused. “You did?”

“I was worried. But I also found out something yesterday that works in our favor. Julian has had someone following you. A private investigator. He has eyes on your movements.”

*Julian had me followed?” Her voice sharpened. “Are you serious?”

“Yes. But think about what that means. You want him to catch us in the act. And he already has eyes on you. All we need to do is set the stage. His man will report back to him and Julian will come running himself. Who knows? He might even bring Seraphine along.”

There was silence on her end while she worked through it.

“We could do this today,” I said. “If you are ready.”

“I thought the security situation was going to take more time.”

“We will talk about that when we see each other. The situation has changed. I will explain everything in

person.”

“We are really seeing each other today then?”

“Yes. I will pick you up. I have a venue in mind.” I paused. “I also have something I want to tell you. In person. Not over the phone.”

A brief quiet on her end. Then, “That sounds perfect. I will be waiting for you.”

I ended the call and drove and did not try to stop the smile that had been sitting on my face since the
