Chapter 206

I turned to my mother, my voice softening. “Mom, I am very sorry. I genuinely planned for this moment to be pleasant, but there is a stranger here and don’t feel comfortable saying what I want to say.

But Mom, you have to trust me, okay? Twill not do anything against my conscience, and I have not done anything wrong. The ones who have offended me are the ones who should be worrying. I only refuse to sit down and take whatever they throw at me.

Since they want to play a game with my life, I will show them that I can play it even better. Mom, I know you are hurt that I have severed ties with this fool. But he had it coming. For a long time I have overlooked a lot of things, especially his stupid obsession with Seraphine. And now, after finding out what he did to Sierra, knowing she is pregnant with his child, I feel sick to my stomach. I cannot acknowledge that I am related to him. I will call you and find time for us to talk properly.”

“But Celeste, this Dominic…”

“Do not worry, Mom. I will tell you more about him at the proper time. And do not worry, I will bring him to see you eventually.”

My mother looked troubled, her eyes flickering between me and Felix, but I pulled her into my arms and whispered into her ear. “Dominic already confessed to me, Mom. He said he is in love with me and I feel the same way about him. You should be happy

for us.”

When I pulled away, my mother let out a long sigh. “So you are telling me that you are happy?”

I clawed at the arm digging into my windpipe, my nails tearing into skin, the car swerving across the lane as I fought to keep one hand on the wheel while the other hand scratched and grabbed and searched for anything to hurt whoever had me. Whoever it was said nothing. No threats, no demands, just cold, practiced silence, the kind that told me this was not the first time they had done this. I slammed my foot down on the brake and threw my elbow back with everything I had, felt it connect with something solid, but the arm around my throat only tightened harder.

A cloth pressed hard over my nose and mouth, soaked in something sharp and sickly sweet. I bucked against it, twisting my whole body, kicking at the door, my lungs burning for air that would not come. I tried to scream and got nothing but a muttled, useless sound against the fabric. The chemical smell filled my head, thick and suffocating, and the last thing I registered was the car drifting off the road, my hands slipping from the wheel, my body going slack.

Then, everything went black.
