Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 431

Madam Lily appeared at the entrance, her apron gone, replaced by a fine dress I had never seen her wear, her face bright with a joy that made her look decades younger. She hurried over and dipped her head to Sparrow's grandmother.

"Everything is ready, ma'am. The officiant is in place. The guests are seated. We are only waiting on the bride and groom."

The old woman nodded. "And who is walking her down the aisle?"

Madam Lily's smile softened. "The bride's father is not present, ma'am. So I arranged for the groom to walk her in himself."

The old woman considered this, then nodded slowly. "Good. That is good. He should not leave her standing alone."

"Exactly my thinking, ma'am."

Then the doors opened, and the music swelled, and the cameras began to fire again.

The hall was enormous. I had seen grand things in my life, had broken into houses that could fit a village, had slept in hotel suites that cost a fortune a night, but this was something else. Crystal chandeliers hung from a painted ceiling, throwing light across every surface. Flowers cascaded down both sides of the aisle in white and green, so many of them that the air smelled like a garden. The guests sat in rows and rows, men in tailored suits, women in dresses that cost more than most people made in a year, every single one of them holding a phone or a camera pointed at the aisle.

The ceremony unfolded. I barely heard most of it, my attention split three ways, between Tasha's face, searching it for any sign that she was overwhelmed, and Sparrow's profile, and the old woman in the front row who kept glancing back at me like she expected me to pull out a knife. When the officiant asked for the rings, I stepped forward and handed them over, and Tasha smiled at me, a real smile, and I wanted to cry.

"Do you, Sparrow, take this woman, Tasha, to be your lawfully wedded wife?"

"I do."

"Do you, Tasha, take this man, Sparrow, to be your lawfully wedded husband?"
